Maiocco's Matchups to Watch

http://www.csnbayarea.com/10/08/10/Maiocco-49ers-Eagles-Matchups-to-Watch/landing_maiocco_v3.html?blockID=327458&feedID=5936

49ers Safety Taylor Mays (23) vs. Eagles Receiver DeSean Jackson (10)

Jackson is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL, and it will take a team effort for the 49ers to limit his effectiveness Sunday night at Candlestick Park. Mays will have a lot of responsibilities in Sunday's game, including some underneath coverage against tight end Brent Celek. But there will be times when his assignment will be to provide deep coverage in the 49ers' two-deep zone against speedsters Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. The 49ers can ill-afford to give up the big play against Jackson, who averages an astounding 21.1 yards per catch. Philadelphia will undoubtedly attempt to test Mays' coverage skills. At his size, it's difficult for him to change direction while attempting to cover a smaller, quicker receiver, such as Jackson. But Mays has great straight-line speed, and if he can get a big hit on Jackson in the secondary, it could serve as intimidation.

49ers RT Anthony Davis (76) vs. Eagles DE Brandon Graham (54)

The 49ers traded up two spots to take Davis with the No. 11 overall pick. The Eagles then landed Graham with the 13th pick. On Sunday, they'll be going head-to-head. Graham (6-2, 268, Michigan) has nine tackles and a sack in his first four games. He has quickness around the edge and also has the power to use as an asset. Davis (6-5, 323) is coming off a strong game in Atlanta after struggling a week earlier at Kansas City. Davis threw a monster block on Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes to pave the way for Vernon Davis to get into the end zone on a first-quarter screen play. He also held up in pass protection. Davis has yet to put back-to-back games together, so this matchup will be one worth watching.

49ers Offensive Coordinator Mike Johnson vs. Eagles Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott

Now that Johnson has called an entire NFL game from the booth, we'll see if the Eagles can pick up on some of his tendencies. Johnson will not have tight end Delanie Walker available for at least a couple weeks with a high ankle sprain. That's about 20 snaps a game that Johnson will have to offset with different personnel packages. That should open the door for ex-Eagles running back Brian Westbrook to get on the field and make a contribution. Johnson wants to show a variety of looks and mix up his play-calling. Johnson will have to come up with all the right answers to handle what McDermott throws his way. McDermott is in his second season as defensive coordinator after assuming the role after the death of longtime coordinator Jim Johnson. Like Johnson before him, McDermott believes in applying pressure in a variety of different ways. Since the beginning of last year, the Eagles rank second in the NFL with 57 sacks and fourth in the NFL with 44 takeaways.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Could this be the one? Well...it kinda has to be the one. If we don't win this one, I will finally start worrying about our season. Especially when you factor in Vick (and possibly McCoy) not playing.

The 49ers are 3 point favorites to open with a 38 over/under. Initially I like the 49ers and the Under. Means you should probably pick the opposite!

SE's 49er Keys to Victory

*Lock down DJax/Maclin/Celek. Stuff them at the line. Let them catch the short, easy passes that our defense typically allows and Kolb will dink/dunk all day.

*QB Pressure. Vick makes this OLine look better than it is. Keep Kolb moving and he'll make poor decisions.

*Throw it down field. Running the ball and only throwing short passes allows defenses to creep up on you. Then you can't do either effectively.

SE's Eagle Keys to Victory

*Passes out of the backfield. The 49ers just can't stop them. Period.

*Establish the Run. Outside runs work best if you can get a blocker out there for Willis. Then...

*Play Action. The 49er Secondary bites almost every damn time. Goldson and Mays are ball hawks...reel 'em in, then air it out.

It's hard to say what to expect from the 49ers Offense. Ginn should be back this game which means that Vernon Davis wont be the only deep threat. Crabtree is looking better, but Delanie Walker is probably not going to play. Then there's Brian Westbrook? Sure would be nice to see him establish himself as a fixture in the offense versus his old team. Can Mike Johnson work him into the game plan? I don't see what's so hard about designing plays with both Gore and Westbrook in the backfield.

I'll update this thread as the week rolls along. My Prediction? A 20-13 victory for San Francisco. Tied 13 -13 until a punt return for a TD in the final 2 minutes puts this one on the books for the Niners.

GO NINERS!

With Vick and McCoy prob out I see a DESPERATE Niner team riding the legs of Frank Gore to a 24-20 win.

I love these topics Saint Elistan, but where's the Chiefs vs Colts thread? :(

Will make threads for emoticons! ;)

Look forward to watching the Chiefs / Colts game. Should be pretty damn good. Hope the Chiefs can keep the momentum going. Good luck!

Eagles fan, but I see this as San Fran's first win.

In a touch of delicious irony, the loss will be the only time this year that Andy Reid is smarter than his counterpart on the other sideline.

This here thread be updated. Looks like McCoy will play. Changes things a little...but not much. Asante Samuel is out.

Doesn't look like Kyle Williams will play. Ginn will take over return duties...interesting tidbit, the last person to return a punt for a TD against the Eagles was Ginn.

Ginn's return could spark 49ers' offense

http://www.sacbee.com/2010/10/10/3093175/ginns-return-could-spark-49ers.html#storylink=omni_popular

The 49ers will get Ted Ginn Jr., their fastest wide receiver, back in the lineup after he's missed the last three contests with a sprained knee. Ginn and quarterback Alex Smith began to develop a good rapport in training camp with Smith frequently hitting him on deep passes down the sideline. Still, Smith hasn't hit Ginn – or any of his wideouts – deep all season. His longest pass play of the year is a 41-yard toss to tight end Vernon Davis that came during a Week 2 loss to the Saints. Morgan's longest gain of the season is 17 yards. No. 1 receiver Michael Crabtree's is 32 yards, but that came on an intermediate reception that Crabtree turned into a big gain with his feet.

I doubt it. But sure, why not.

In that pregame interview, Singletary made Karl Childers sound like a Rhodes Scholar. :(

Thanks. Hall showed some promise. Two defensive TDs and a fumble recovery helped a little as well.

Huh...anyone else notice that Taylor Mays said his high school and not USC on that intro? Wonder what's up with that.

Ridiculous. Anyone going to watch Celek tonight?

Yea, that was ridiculous, it wasn't even like Kolb did something spectacular, just terrible tackling.

Phew. The Crabtree/Smith connection is alive and well.

That fumble wont help though. <_<

Get Morgan out of there. Thanks for not blocking that guy.

My GOD. What is it that's squeaking...

Sounds like a damn wheelbarrow.

I read that right? Not a single incomplete pass from either passer yet?

Agreed, though the way they closed it out is why they'll lose more close games than they win.

Throwing that pass on 3rd down when they should have been running clock was insipid. There's a time and place for that call. None of them were today. And DRC should have been down on the ground as soon as he caught the INT, but then he wouldn't be DRC, would he?

Well, Crabtree plays well. At least there's that.

It's really funny that the announcers bring that up. "Smith plays best when he calls his own plays in 2 Minute offense". Let's just do that going forward.

Who needs an OC? Hell, get an upgrade at QB and make ALEX the OC for all I care.
