fricker66 92 Posted March 31, 2006 Today is the 75th anniversary of his death due to a plane crash. Apparently, there are numerous ND folks attending an outdoor memorial service today at the crash site in Bazaar, KS.

In Rudy, he watches a clip from "Knute Rockne, All American" starring Pat O'Brien as Knute Rockne and Ronald Reagan as Frank Gipp. The speech is depicted in that movie. I don't know where I'll be then, Doc, but I won't smell too good. That's for sure."
paulinstl 296 Posted March 31, 2006 Growing up in a poor family, Rockne had to work four years in a post office to save enough money to attend Notre Dame. Once there, he made the most of it. He was an All-American in football and was a scribe for the school newspaper and yearbook. He reached the finals of the school's marbles tournament, took the lead in most school theater performances and played flute in the orchestra. When he wasn't doing all that, Rockne was boxing semiprofessionally. He graduated in 1913 and accepted positions as chemistry department graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1918, he became head coach of the Irish and over the next 13 years, his teams won 88 percent of their games and captured six national titles. But Rockne was more than just the football coach, he also was the athletic director, ticket manager and track coach. What's more, he redesigned the Notre Dame uniforms, was the principal designer for Notre Dame Stadium, authored three books, and managed a thriving stock brokerage firm on the side. Knute Rockne only lived to be 42, but he didn't get cheated
