Played tons of pitch, growing up. Tried to explain it to people many times, but no one's ever familiar w/ the game (which is pretty kick-ass).

ETA: Toro. (Seems to be a requirement today.)

You know 5-point? 7 point is the exact same, just add in the jokers. If hearts would be trump, it goes:

AH, KH, QH, JH, JD, High-Joker, Low-Joker, 10H, 9,H, ETC...

jokers dont count anything towards game.

also, 5 point is the same as 4 point, you just add in the jick (jack same color as trump, opposite suit)

so the jick and the jokers count as trump?

settlement = settling up = payout.

if you are playing for $$$ who get what at the end of a game.

so everyone throws in a dollar plus and extra for every time you were set?

yep. You know how bidding works? Starts to the left of the deal, min. bid 2 and you bid out of the points you think you can make. When playing 7-point you go to 15, 11 when you play 4 or 5 point.

great game

We play draw pitch 3 down one up

6 point - high, low, jack, joker, jit (little joker below the lowerst trump in play), and game

18 point game

We used to have 4 hand tourniments all the time. With about 30 table (60 teams) on average. 10 dollars a team and the winnings got split between the top 4 teams. That was until the TLCB jumped in and shut the games down.

I like like 6 hand the best

In gambling terms I have heard it referred to as race horse. (ex) every man for himself 1 dollar for each point bid. If you make it the others pay 1 dollar for each point bid. If you get set you play each one dollar for each point bid.

Great game. We play it for a week straight on vacation with 2 other families after the kiddes go to bed. It always work out that if we have 4 players = hearts, > 4 is pitch.

The week always starts with conservative bidding (2 bids), and by the end of the week, you need a 3 or 4 bid to call trump. :wall:

'round here we have pitch and setback.

Setback is the 3 player game with points for High, Low, Jack and game. Pitch is the 4 player game where the points are for Ace, Deuce (instead of High and Low since all trump cards come out), Jack, game, nine and five. Real fun games both of them.

Call smudge, I dare yah!!!

Wow - since this thread has taken off a little I'll give you my full setback/pitch rundown.

From what I've learned, the main difference between setback and pitch is that you have to follow suit in pitch, while in setback you can throw trump at any time. So if non-trump is led (let's say trump is hearts) and you have last throw, you can throw the deuce of hearts even if you have the non-trump led suit in your hand. Of course this means lots of other plays and strategy come into effect. For instance, if my partner bids and leads the Ace of trump, followed by a non-trump lead and the deuce has not been played, it's my job to 'deuce block' to keep the last throw from taking the 2. We will occasionally even 'Jack Block' or on the rare occasion even 10 block.

Anyway, here are the two main games I've always played:

Setback

4 players (2 teams of 2)

Deal out 9 cards (in groups of three, don't kow why but it goes faster if anything else)

One round of bidding (minimum two, max four, dealer can only take a 4 bid - must over bid or pass on 2 or 3)

You keep only and all trump cards and then re-deal to six total.

Bidder must lead trump

you have to follow suit EXCEPT 1) if you don't have that suit (obviously) or 2) you play trump

four points available: High (generally Ace of trump) Low (generally Deuce of trump) Jack of trump and 'game' (all A=4, all K=3, all Q=2, all J=1, all 10=10)

play to 21, you have to bid to win. You get all points earned, so if you bid 2 and get 4, you get 4. If bidding team gets 'set', they lose bid points and other team keeps what they got (I bid 3, you get three means I'm at -3, you are at 3)

_______________________________________

Double Deck

after playing for about 10 years and many times having only 3 people (or our one friend who always 'held the p*ssy' by saying he didn't feel like playing), we came up with a variation that is lot of fun to play:

Use two decks, so there are 8 points available:

Two highs

Two lows

Two Jacks

Game

Game 50 (if you manage to get over 50 'game' points you get an extra, but that can't win you the game ie if that's your 21st point, you still have to bid and win to win the game)

you DO NOT have to lead trump first trick

deal 12, keep all and any trump, redeal to 6

Now comes the fun part:

If ANY two trump cards match on the same trick, the entire trick is null and void. So if I have the A of trump, and the guy to my left holds the AKK of trump:

I lead the A

He plays his A, cancelling the trick (other two players must follow suit so dump crappy trump cards)

I lead again (low trump)

next guy takes trick, and now holds "double high" with his KK in his hand.

Even better is when I lead the A of trump, next guy throws the 5 of trump, my partener gives me a Jack of trump, and the last guy happens to also have a 5 of trump in his hand, plays it, and wipes out our A and J in one swoop.

The strategy gets really cool. If I hold AA in trump, I will lead non trump, and then wait for non trump tricks to dump my Aces on to hopefully make sure they don't get cancelled out. The other team will know this, so try to lead trump, suck out one of my Aces, and hopefully have the other matching trump cards to cancel the trick.

On non-trump tricks, the trick is cancelled only if the HIGHEST non-trump card matches. So if Hearts are trump:

10 of clubs is led, next is 4 of Diamonds (no clubs in hand), 3 of clubs played next, last throws the other 10 of clubs - the trick is cancelled. if the last guy throws the other 3 of clubs, the 10 of clubs takes the trick.

Now what's great is that you can play this with 3 people. Basically it turns into 2 against 1 (guy that bid vs. other two). LOTS of force bids to the dealer in this. LOTS of cancelling just to be a ###### (like the bidder has to lead the 2 of trump, the next gut throws the J to get two points, and the last guy - holding the J and 5 of trump - decides to cancel the trick with the J so the second guy doesn't get the 2 points for J and Low).

Oh, and you can "take off the top" in a force bid, so if your original 12 cards are just incredible sucky, you can take the next 6 cards off the top of the deck and play those. So you take those 6, declare trump, and the other 2 guys still get to discard and get a redeal. Those usually wind up to be pretty funny hands.

Try it - it's a lot of fun, especially in the 'cancel fest' hands when every trick but the last gets cancelled and the J winds up winning high, low, J and game all at once

Oh - and we outlawed "smudge" and "double smudge" in 1995.

you can trump in anytime at pitch also. Spades is the only game I know of where you cant trump in unless you are out of the suit that led.
