GettnHuge 2 Posted July 2, 2007 Why are you posting someone else's opinion?? I have my own review of it on imdb, but picked something off the 1st couple pages to save time. And I don't believe it when people say they 'get it' and it still sucks. Just getting that it's a parody isn't getting it. But then again the people who don't get it, make it even better because they don't even realize that they are watching this movie and pulling for the Nazis. So the rest of us can lol at them. Author: jamesjlr2 from Houston _Starship Troopers_ is the greatest pro/anti-war film ever made. This is something that no one seems to recognize considering that, when it was first released, most critics seemed to have been somewhat disturbed by the fact that the `good guys' resembled Nazis and that was about as far as they went before blowing it off as just another shoot-em-up. No one has bothered to re-assess the film since. Why has Starship Troopers with its profound comments on war and human nature been relegated to the ranks of films like _Rambo_ and _Universal Soldier_? One reason is that the satire is extremely subtle and another is that people are prejudiced against action films. This is probably justified though since the vast majority of them are pure fluff. However, _Starship Troopers_ ruthlessly satirizes the genre while being one of the best of in its category, which is a feat that is quite brilliant. There is so much about this film to analyze and it might even take a book to cover it all, so I will stick to only one thing here: the alien bugs, which are the enemy in the film. The Earth is at war with these creatures. They're inhuman, vicious. This is graphically demonstrated through out the film but most notably via a propaganda website that the movie presents to us as a futuristic version of `Why We Fight'. At one point, a cow is lead into a pen holding one of these giant insects, which quickly cleaves the cow in two. We are horrified! These insects truly are barbaric, evil! Look what it did to that cow! They must be destroyed! (Yet how many of us had steak before seeing this movie?) Then the website narrator proudly states that people on Earth are doing their part in the war effort as we watch a woman and her children dump Earth bugs on the ground and stomp on them. These bugs are native to our planet. Like the American-Japanese in WWII, why are they getting picked on? How are the bug-stomping mother and her children any more humane and caring than the repulsive alien insects?
Yer mom 2 Posted July 2, 2007 pfeh, ST is one of the best anti-war parodies ever. Course those who wrote negative reviews of it considered it an action movie. If you think starship troopers sucks then you feel the same about Dr. Strangelove, right? Author: R-Grant from United Kingdom Quick summary: hilariously good-looking people. Never have the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 looked so good. Brilliant special effects - they barely look dated even today. Superb music. Solid directing. The film hangs together very, very well. OK. This film is a parody, first of all. It - incredibly, although satirically - depicts a functional, working fascist society, which is divided into "civilians" and "citizens". It also depicts this society as an aggressive one - invading an alien species' territory, then fully going to war against it when it retaliates. It depicts the media as a major agent in this regard: there are few options as to what to watch, and the first is the "Federal" channel. It's also very brutal. This is an anti-war film, and also a film with aliens in. It has people ripped apart, although the parody remains (at one point, "Mormon extremists" are massacred in an output). It's tongue-in-cheek to the death. It's important to remember this though: the humans are the aggressors here. They started the fight. However the barrage of media spin, drill-sergeant conditioning and comradely banter creates the impression the humans are the good guys. The attitude of all of the characters reflects this; they believe that they are retaliating, when they are actually the initiators. The film gives some insight into how an invading country's citizens (in the general sense of the word!) can be convinced that what they are doing is right. Or, I just wasnt entertained There is always a significant group of people who don't "get" parodies. A couple of other movies with the same problem are Mars Attacks and Galaxy Quest. Mars Attacks

Franknbeans 46 Posted July 2, 2007 John Travalto in the late 90's created two of the worst movies EVER made: Battlefield Earth Broken Arrow The low water mark for Travolta was this piece o' feces... paulinstl 296 Posted July 2, 2007 By far, "Titanic". Written for 12 year old girls so they'd go see it 7 times in one summer. What a POS movie. Boogie Nights. wiffleball 4,759 Posted July 2, 2007 And I don't believe it when people say they 'get it' and it still sucks. Just getting that it's a parody isn't getting it. And there's are people who don't 'get' that just being a paradoody doesn't make it a good movie. Some people who figure out that something is a parody makes them feel smart and cool - without going any further than "it's a parody", so it MUST be great!!. Yes, it's a parody, but is it subtle, intelligent, thought provoking and - lets not forget - ENTERTAINING?? There are people who say that people who don't like crap movies "just don't get it". - Like Napoleon Dynamite. There's a big difference between not getting it and not being entertained by it. That's like all those self-referential movies that have come out that 'lampoon' Hollywood with inside jokes & self-important references. They pull one of those "Macy Gray's" wherein Everybody who likes it is 'sophisticated'. Whereas the REAL truth is it was just badly done, droll and unfunny. I'm glad that somebody liked the movie. As a parody it's about as subtle as a jackhammer - and half as intelligent. See Dr. Strangelove for an example of effective - and entertaining - parody. IGotWorms 4,024 Posted July 2, 2007 Some of you guys must be borderline retarded. Starship Troopers and Donnie Darko were both very good movies. Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights were also pretty good. If you couldn't appreciate them, that says something about YOU, not the films. Now, worst movie I remember seeing? Batman and Robin. Only movie I've ever walked out of. Although I would've walked out of Ocean's 12, but my gf at the time thought it was good.

IGotWorms 4,024 Posted July 2, 2007 I was thinking the same thing, why yer panties in a twist Big Worm? You guys are passing qualitative judgment on a movie when you say it is the "worst" you have ever seen. Maybe you didn't enjoy Donnie Darko, perhaps you didn't get Starship Troopers, but that doesn't mean that they are BAD movies.

Snuff 10 Posted July 2, 2007 Do you mean to say that there are no objectively bad movies? No. The thread title has the phrase "worst movie YOU can remember seeing." As in personal. As in your own personal belief or opinion. That is why when someone mentions a movie like "Titanic" in a thread like this, it is fine. But when discussing the worst movies of all time on a non-personal/opinion level, to include a movie that smashed box office records, would be ludicrous. Rusty Syringes 478 Posted July 2, 2007 Mars Attacks! and Starship Troopers have no business being mentioned. Mars Attacks! is one of the funniest movies ever made, and I thought Starship Troopers was wildly entertaining. If you want an awful movie, look no further than the first "Death Ship," starring Earnest Borgnine and a few other moderately famous people. It was made at the tail end of the slasher wave that started with "Halloween." It must have had about a $10,000 budget.

You are implying this and denying it at the same time. I guess you think the backstreet boys and nsync are awesome. A lot of people like them. You're combining the personal opinion and the opinion of the masses again. I feel like I am discussing something with torrid here. All I am saying is that this thread is a personal opinion topic. I questioned someone when they attacked other's opinions, as if theirs was the only one that counted. I then pointed out that by including (an example)a movie that made a ton of money, moreso than most ever in the history of movies, along with the fact that it was seen by almost half the planet, some numerous times, that it *might* be a little odd to include a movie such as this as "the worst movie ever", IF discussing it an a non-opinion discussion of movies. Admittingly, it is a difficult topic to discuss because things such as this are indeed opinion based anyways. What can you use for talking points? Money it brought in along with "public" opinion. Regardless, I believe that there is some sort of objective quality to a movie. Sure, some people may appreciate certain movies more than others, but some movies are simply good in an artistic sense, whereas others are terrible.
Groundhog 24 Posted July 2, 2007 I'm with GettnHuge on this one. Starship Troopers is a very unappreciated flick. There is always a significant group of people who don't "get" parodies. A couple of other movies with the same problem are Mars Attacks and Galaxy Quest. Both are tongue-in-cheek parodies that make fun of the 50's B-movie genre and the Star Trek TV/film series, respectively. They are great fun if you happen to catch the in-jokes. by this logic, any parody with a sufficient number of in-jokes would (1) automatically be a good movie, and (2) those who don't "get it" simply aren't cognoscenti of the genre. This is both elitist and a lazy argument. I hated MARS Attacks. I understood what it was trying to do. It was still a crappy movie, IMO. Simply telling people like me "sorry, you just don't get the brilliance of it", or something to that effect, is no more compelling an argument than a father telling his child "when you're older, you'll understand".
