Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and quarterback Brett Favre plan to meet at an undisclosed location later this week to discuss the possibility of the former Packers and Jets quarterback renouncing his retirement from the NFL to play the 2009 season with the Vikings, according to a source with direct knowledge of discussions between the two parties.

There is a mutual understanding that sometime soon thereafter Favre will decide whether to sign with the Vikings. The team would expect him to participate fully in offseason minicamps and training camps, which he missed last year with the Jets.

Favre has not been working out and declined to have surgery to repair the torn biceps tendon that plagued him the final month of last season.

Favre may believe the injury can heal on its own as did a similar problem with his left shoulder while he played in Green Bay. A source close to Favre told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that how the injury heals will play a role in the quarterback's decision.

The source also said that the quarterback's agent, Bus Cook, is researching unemployed NFL quarterback coaches to see if one can be hired to work with Favre in Mississippi while he ponders a possible return.

Favre wanted to play for the Vikings last season, but the Packers specifically eliminated their NFC North rivals as a potential destination for the Green Bay icon.

While Favre had been emphatic about not returning next season, he never anticipated the Jets would release him after drafting Mark Sanchez in the first round and could see the Vikings as the opportunity to fulfill the goal he was deprived of last season -- winning a Super Bowl.

Favre admitted to ESPN that he was motivated to play in 2008 largely because of his resentment toward Packers general manager Ted Thompson.

The Vikings had planned to have Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels compete for the starting quarterback position in training camp. With Jackson battling injuries last season, journeyman Gus Frerotte started 11 games and led the Vikes in passing.

Minnesota finished 10-6 to capture the NFC North but lost to the Eagles in the first round of the playoffs in a game started by Jackson.

Ed Werder covers the NFL for ESPN. Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL analyst for ESPN.

Highlighted bit and translation.... Just because they thought I was finished and moving on with another player, I had to prove to them and the world that I am a real douchebage by coming back playing so well. After all, it wasn't about me it was about what the Jets fans wanted and needed.

Does this mean that Madden will now un-retire as well?

He's earned the right to do whatever he wants, I just don't care about it and dont want to hear about it all summer long.

Maybe he just really wants to stick it to TT, but I think he's taking a giant sh!t on Pack fans.

And I won't even briefly consider him at all this year for fantasy purposes. I had him all last year, and by playoff time I was starting Seneca focking Wallace.

I was a Favre Backer when he left to go to the Jets. I thought good for him, if he wants to play one more year and maybe try to make something happen. But this is pathetic and I'm sick of it.

He retired with the Packers after a 12-4 season because he said he didn't know if he could put his heart in all of the offseason things. So now after learning a whole new system, he wants to learn another? So you don't come back to a 12-4 team with the same system, but are willing to change teams twice and learn a new book and meet new players?

Makes no sense.

If he goes to Min. I hope he fails big time. I hope instead of 20 ints he throws 30 and gets boo'd into retirement.

Yeah, enough of this already.

We all know what happened here. Favre retired an then thought he would play the knight in shining armor, unretire and lead the Pack to the promised land. When TT and co. said no thanks, we have moved on, Brett got butt hurt and wanted to stick it to them by playing for Minn (who happened to have a nice team assembled for a run).

NY was just a pit stop in making that scenario happen once the Packers said they would not trade him to the Vikes. I suppose if the Jets had made the playoffs, won the SB or something that would have been enough for Favre to say "hey, look what you missed out on", but now he is simply coming back to do what he wanted to do last year.

Too bad this title of this thread seems wrong...he was not actually there to meet with him...but it now appears Childress is headed to Miss to meet with Favre.

But will John David Booty give up the #4?

does he have a choice? what Favre wants Favre gets.... If i was wearing number 4 for the Vikes it would take a pretty penny to get it <_<

I wish that when Sage chose his number a week or so ago, that he would have thought to pick 4 instead of 2. We'd all know more than we do right now, and he might have made so money off of the deal.

The whole point of the wanting Favre to do bad if he was with the Vikings is because He Himself, retired from the Packers. He said he didn't think he could give it the proper effort. Fast Forward to him maybe in a Vikes jersey and that would be 2 different teams, 2 different playbooks, 2 years older, 2 more locker rooms full of guys to meet and learn how to play with. All while he could have came back to a 12-4 team with all the same players and scheme.

All he would be doing is playing out of spite and trying to stick it to TT. That is down right pathetic. And a real slam to GB and long time Favre fans. Play for a team but not the Vikes or Bears. His legacy as a GB Packer would be forever tarnished.

I am all for spite... i think it is awesome and can fuel some amazing rivalries / performances. But Favre has no reason to be spiteful. He did this all to himself.

The guy is still hurt. What good is a broken down Favre?

Most likely still better than T. Jackson. He would just have to hand the ball off to AP and have the threat to go deep.

My guess is if he does play they will sneak into the playoffs or just miss, he will have another 20 int year and further tarnish his career. Maybe he is waiting for some magic to happen. Either way it's pathetic.

About that possibly.

Interesting to me in that it would have to lead to a long playoff run.

Anything short and how is he sticking it to Ted Thompson? Tarvaris and Gus took them to the division title and a playoff appearance. If Favre cannot even do that...he did TT a favor by having the Vikings still not have a clue what to do at QB for another year.

I guess just getting fans in a frenzy about playing for the Vikes and say they beat GB in GB or twice (even if it is not Favre who wins the game for them) it will be a win I would think. Also if the Vikes win more games than GB with Favre as Minnys QB and Rodgers as GBs QB (stats don't matter) It would be a win for Favre.

When it is all said and done I don't care. I am not on a TT or Favre side, never have been. With TT it is about winning for me and to now, he hasn't. For Favre going to the Vikes is about the worst thing he could do, and it seems like it will happen.

I disagree that Minny wining more than GB is a win for Favre...they did that last year without him.

It is interesting to see the fine line between what would be sticking it to the Pack and enhancing his career and what would be a failure and a tarnish to his career.

When he had the Jets at 8-3 everyone was buzzing about how it was a great move and he had made them a top 2 or 3 team in the conference. They had a legit SB chance and the simple fact that he was taking a 4-12 team to the playoffs meant the Pack had made a mistake.

Then they lose 4 of the last 5, miss the playoffs and Brett is a failure and tarnishes his career. 1 more win in those last 5 would have put them in the playoffs i believe. That alone might have been enough to deem the move successful. A playoff win would have iced it.

Now even if he somehow ends up on the Vikings he would need to probably win the Super Bowl or at the very least get them deep in the playoffs to redeem himself.

They don't have to improve. It still looks like Favre>Rodgers in some way. It would still be Favre's team > Packers.

Think about BMoney and his argument. It still looks like the Packers are worse off without him and his last 12-4 season.

Whos fault was it for their failure at the end. Go back and look at his stats. He had a solid start of the year and had them going strong, but in the end he had so many bad games and they didn't make the playoffs. Now he is a year older with worse weapons at WR.

You have to remember the Jets D and running game was improved and that helped more than Favre for their improved win total.

im not saying it wasn't his fault. It certainly was. I am one of the Jets fans that feel we would have been better off with Pennington managing games.

However Favre played well and you can't ignore how it helped the team over the first 12 weeks. Penny didn's scare anyone with his arm. As much as the offensive line was improved, the running game was also helped by the idea of Favre's arm keeping defenses honest.

but that is beside the point. I was merely commenting that it is a fine line between Favre helping or hurting his image by what he has done. And that line was quite possibly one more win last year.

Maybe, he still is throwing too many picks, and had some terrible games. WHat happens if they won 1 more game and he threw 3 ints in the playoff game and they were killed?

He just looked like a tired old man down the stretch, it was hard to watch. If Penny didn't do so well in Miami it wouldn't have looked so bad.

we are on the same page... the guy is done. no way should he come back. I was just looking at a different angle. I really do think that if they had won one more game, made the playoffs that it would have been viewed as Favre being successful and the Packers possibly making a mistake.

I suppose he could have single handedly lost them a playoff game and taken all the blame again but idk :)

and he certainly wasnt the only reason for the Jets improvements.

I would add...for now.

But for now, the Vikings now have to scramble and act as if they did not go after him and convince their QBs they have confidence in them.

Favre may have just kind of screwed them a bit with that...one last chance to beat the Vikes I guess.

Yeah, but its not like they're dealing with first overall QB picks here. Who cares if their confidence is hurt? How many times have each of these guys been benched in the last 2 years?

Sage is a journeyman and it's common knowledge that Jackson sucks (unless he can't read). It has to be pretty clear to these two that neither of them are "exactly" what the Vikings are looking for right now. At worst they go back to square one, and at best they use this episode as motivation.
