Cara 0 Posted June 23, 2009 People seem very divided in their opinions of this guy. Is he going to hit the 85 + catch mark that Peter King (SI) believes, or will be be more in line for 55 catches and 3/4 TD's? I can see him being a very valuable slot guy and/or a 3rd down chain moving type of WR. Peter King seems to think he will crack the top 15 to 20 mark this season in the new SI fantasy magazine. Thoughts? He is available on the waiver wire in 4 of my dynasty leagues and I'm considering picking him up.

Thoughts? He is available on the waiver wire in 4 of my dynasty leagues and I'm considering picking him up. I stashed him last year in dynasty ppr league figuring that Toomer was on his last legs. I also have Plax on the same roster and didn't figure on his boneheaded move, but that just pumps up Smith even more. He already had 57 receptions over the course of the season last year (playoffs included) and those #'s can only go up. With Hixon, Nicks and even Barden all vying for Plaxico's spot, and with Toomer gone, I seriously think that Smith will be the security blanket for Eli this year and believe that 75-80 receptions is a possibility. He's the only guy left on the roster that saw consistent playing time last year. The Giants have a very talented roster of WR's but severely lack experience and I think that's going to make Smith very valuable. Obviously he won't get a lot of redzone love with mosters like 6'6" Barden, 6'2" Nicks and 6'2" Hixon (not to mention Kevin Boss, who I also have high on the value list this year) but he is going to be their move the chains guy...and in PPR I figure him for definite top 20. GrimeCity 0 Posted June 23, 2009 No.. You can also see that the they are not to high on him becuase they drafted a WR in the first round and also a pretty good third round one too
jgcrawfish 232 Posted June 23, 2009 No.. You can also see that the they are not to high on him becuase they drafted a WR in the first round and also a pretty good third round one too They drafted size, specifically for the redzone threat. The dude had 57 receptions last year and started ahead some other high profile draft picks. FWIW, that 57 receptions lead the team.
DankNuggs 305 Posted June 23, 2009 Hixon was fantastic filling in for Plex during the season... Guy is very similar to him.. I seem him having a great season... SSmith maybe 60-65 for 700 or so? Won't be the #1 guy...
DankNuggs 305 Posted June 23, 2009 rookies won't contribute this year... don't understand why people make the same mistakes year after year... rookie WR just don't produce early...
We Tigers 71 Posted June 23, 2009 I don't think any one player on the Giants will be grabbing 80 receptions this year, and I also tend to disagree with every projection Peter King's bloviating, coffee-whining self ever makes. That said, I do like Smith to be the steady possession guy who can be a fair replacement if one of your top receivers busts, good for 40-60 yards a week. jdon 28 Posted June 23, 2009 rookies won't contribute this year... don't understand why people make the same mistakes year after year... rookie WR just don't produce early... exactly... I like s. smith as a dynasty stash away player and as a late round flyer in redraft... best case scenario he catchs 5-6 balls a game and a few scores from way out... one huge minus is that he probably won't be heard from inside the 20. jdon

Smith had 7 more receptions than Toomer on 7 less targets and will now essentially replace Toomer as the possession WR in the offense. One more catch per game average will put him a 70+ reception pace and 1.5 will put him at 80 receptions. That's good value in PPR for a guy still sitting out on most WW and not bad value as a #4 or #5 WR in non PPR formats.

cblue 0 Posted June 23, 2009 I don't think he will catch 80+ balls in that run based offense and he is not the primary red-zone target when the do pass in goal-line situations. Additionally, drafting a 1st round WR is not a good indicator of any confidence that NYG has in Smith and Hixon.

He will be a very valuable slot/move the chains receiver to the team, but I don't see a lot of fantasy value except as a bye week fill in. Between his quickness, hands, and route running, he's a guy who is very difficult to defend. But he doesn't have the explosiveness to be a big after the catch playmaker, the top speed to be a dangerous down the field theat, or the size to be a big redzone threat. He'll probably catch 60-65 balls and be a big asset to the Giants passing game, but less so for fantasy owners for the reasons stated. The Giants will spread the ball around to a lot of guys this year.
