Trip to Mexico

Recommended Posts

This summer I am going to be taking a trip with my wife(36c) and another couple. We want to go to Mexico and while the other couple has experience with Cancun I have never been. We definitely want to be on the Gulf side. I've never done the all-inclusive thing but I've heard it's the way to go.

I am thinking about staying in one of these resorts:

http://www.secretsresorts.com/capri/index.asp

http://www.palaceresorts.com/Resorts/BeachPalace/Index.asp

http://www.palaceresorts.com/Resorts/CancunPalace/Index.asp

Any advice or tips you can give would be great. Also, we're not locked into those resorts but those are the front runners from my little bit of searching (done this morning while trying to work).

Thanks!

My wife (34C/D) and i honeymooned in Cancun and I honestly didn't like it much. Very commercialized. I'm sorry, but I don't go to Cancun to eat at Olive Garden. We also went at bad time...they had hurricane that went through a couple of months prior and ripped up the beach side so badly that you really couldn't go in the water because the drop off was too steep and the undertow was wicked strong.

We also happened to go on, if I correctly recall, the hottest day in Cancun's recorded history. We took a trip from Cancun to Isla Mujeres on the top of catamaran that wasn't shaded. It was reminiscent of that scene from the Salma Hayek ( ) movie "Fools Rush In" where her husband's parents are beet red and the dad says "THE WHITE PEOPLE ARE MELTING OUT HERE!" My wife got a heat rash, we ended the tour early, took a fairy (insert joke here) back across and hung out at the shady part of the hotel pool all day. We toured Xcaret, which pretty cool. We were going to go to the nearby pyramid, but after the hot day and the heat rash, opted to skip that.

All things considered from what I've heard, I'd much rather go to the West Coast side.

Funny Edjr mentions this. the one non-chain restaurant we went to, well, both of ended up with nasty kind of bug what wreaked havoc with our restroom habits for days afterward...The kind of stuff causes the Immodium table you just took to run away frightened. The food was outstanding at the restaurant, but the consequences rendered it all moot.

Thanks for the replies. Any advice as to different resorts? That Secrets resort was in Xcaret not in Cancun and I think I would really like that but I wasn't sure about the area. The couple going with us has always stayed at the Palace resorts and they've loved it so I'm thinking those are the front runners. Anyone ever stayed at a Secrets or Palace resort before?

Have you ever seen that show "Locked Up Abroad"? Don't do what those people do.

Correct.

It is ok to stuff large quantities of drugs up your poopshoot, just don't try and get them on the plane, just do it for the fun of it.

Cancun is way too commercialized, but I don't know what you are looking for.

I have done Cancun, Riviera Maya and the Dominican.

I have preferred a little south of Cancun - Riviera Maya.

I would reccomend looking at recent pics for conditions of the beach.

I think Trip Advisor will have reviews of all the resorts which are worthwhile.

Haiti is your best bet, hotels are real cheap and food and water is free.

I've been to Cancun twice and Puerto Vallarta once. The beaches are better on the East Coast, but I liked PV much, much better.....more sophisticated, better restaurants....felt more like Mexico.

Yeah, Cancun is pretty commercialized along the Hotel Zones but there are some decent restaurants off the beaten path. We stayed at the Westin last year, and had a kitchenette so we made our own meals a few nights.....got stuff for tacos, breakfast the next morning, a fifth of rum, and a 6-pack of Pacifico for like $25.

The places you linked look pretty nice...and if they're all-inclusive, it'd probably be the way to go. The bars close by are loud and annoying...and depending on when you go, might be filled with drunk college kids. But if you're young enough, it might be a good time. There's a mall close too....La Isla I think. Good place to stock up on water....snacks.....and there's a churro vender there.....best. sh!t. ever. The restaurants/bars are ok...nothing special. It looked like there were decent shops....so it might give the gals something to check out.

We didn't do anything touristy last year. There was lots of talk of drug cartels and swine flu was just starting up. We went to the big mercado downtown....waste of time.

Cancun is all about the sun and surf....getting a nice buzz on....and having lots of sex.

Have fun!

Xcaret is an odd place. Travelling from Cancun to there was like going thru a freakin 3rd world country...shanty towns, people living in huts, unclothed kids in the streets...it was kind of surreal...All while sitting in the air conditioned comfort of a luxury travel bus! XCaret itself was nice, downright beautiful. I think if I was gonna go again, I'd rather go there than Cancun. I believe the beaches are less crowded and more secluded. Swimming the underground river is a trip, pretty awesome.

i won't disagree with this, but it's very different when you fly in vs actually driving there. However, I wouldn't go to far off the beaten path, even in Americanized and touristy Cancun.

if you do go to Cancun, i would highly recommend staying in an all-inclusive type place. at least in the Cancun area you will end up spending a lot more if drinks/food isnt included. kind of like disney parks, in that once your in, they can charge you whatever the #### they want and you will pay because you are too drunk/having too good a time to care.

i stayed at The Royal, it was pretty nice.

i also recommend staying in an adults only place. not having kids running around screaming was nice.

Grand Royal Solaris is pretty nice. I believe it is a 4 star all inclusive.

DO NOT misplace your passport or you will be screwed. There was a US girl there last year who went to a bar, had her passport in her purse, and left her purse at the table when she went to the restroom, or dance floor- whatever.

Purse gone= passport gone = good luck getting home.

I keep my passport in the hotel safe, with a copy stashed away in the suitcase.

The busses are the cheap way to travel for shopping, it's like a quarter for the ride.

Inclusives are the way to go if you are spending a lot of time at the resort- kinda crazy to pay for an all inclusive and then go out to resturaunts every night.

The guys selling silver bracelets on the beach are crooks- most of it is silver coated copper.

Be cool at the airport- go straight out to your driver or shuttle- don't get caught in the time share scams inside the airport.

Pick an all inclusive in Playa del Carmen and you won't have to leave the place. Done it several times, always at a different place, and it's the best way go.

If you like drinking all day and relaxing on the beach or by the pool this is the ticket. Pack one pair of dockers type ponts and one collered shirt to get into the nicer resteraunts if you want to skip the buffet food. Most places have about 5 different theme resteraunts and some require something other than beachwear.

You wont' have to worry about security, meals, drinks, travel, etc...........We have used Apple Tours, or Apple Vacations. (not sure which).........they have their sh!t together. Get off the plane in Cancun and look for the guys in the flowery shirts and they take you directly to the bus (and beer). They always have someone on property to organize the trip back. It's the most relaxing way to do Mexico.

Went to Playa Del Carmen and stayed at an all-inclusive close to town (Playacar?). After a few days we got tired of the all-inclusive scene so we ended up going into town and eating scrumptious native foodstuffs. We also took a trip into the jungle and rapelled through the trees and down into a cenote. Good times.

Thanks for the replies all. We've settled on Cancun although exactly which resort we'll be at is still unknown. Any advice on where to go out in Cancun? I want to go to Coco Bongo for sure but other than that I don't know anywhere.
