Best free antivirus....Avast vs. AVG

Recommended Posts

Anyone here tried both? Opinions?

Is the free version sufficient?

Thanks

I've used AVG in the past without any issues. I currently use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's very easy and seems to do an excellent job.

I use Avast. Have done so for many years now, and never had any kind of virus.

ETA: I use the free version.

I used to think Security Essentials was great. It seemed to find and remove stuff that others didn't. The other day, I searched "Avast vs. MSE" ... wow...multiple reviews and message board posts said how much better Avast was.

I've always used AVG in the past...but have heard Avast is very good also.

I basically have ONE antivirus, CCleaner (very lightweight, safe registry cleaner), and every now and again I run hijackthis. I got McAfee free when I bought this computer...and am looking to uninstall and get AVG or Avast. Prolly go with AVG.

You guys have paid or free version?

Ditto but I went with Eset Nod 32. AVG sucked but that was a long time ago. I actually tried the Eset Security Suite but that created firewall problems for me and I know I'm not alone. The AV rocks though.

Every time I've looked at free versions, Avast seems to be the best rated. All the hatred for Security Essentials may be from people who would loathe Microsoft no matter what. What I've heard has been pretty good.

I also have CCleaner installed and run it on occasion. I think it does an outstanding job and am always amazed at the small registry issues it finds and repairs.
