Aside from Nirvana, that's a pretty damn good list

I hate Nirvana with a passion.

Let me correct the above...I hate Cobain with a passion. Spineless ######

I was kinda suprised that you left Morrisey / The Smiths "How soon is now" off your list

A

Yea, I'm a huge Morrisey / The Smiths fan and that is a great song. I just forgot it. How Soon is Now would make my top 10 list.

Kids - MGMT

This is a great example of song context being influential for me. Normally I would hate this song, but it was in a snowboard video and really added to the segment, and now I love it.

Totally understand. I am not a musician - I know nothing about music, instruments, or song writing. Most songs I like are directly related to an event or time in my life that influence me at the time - not what some critic thinks.

Agreed. I had 4 new ones about 10 minutes after I posted my list. Debated adding Southern Cross by CSN, Paint It Black by the Stones and Levon/Take Me to the Pilot by Elton John. I could also add at least 3 from Def Leppard that hit big when I was old enough to appreciate it.

This should be categorized by genre.

After reading some responses I thought of a few more. That's why favorite lists are so good.

Life By The Drop. SRV

These Arms Of Mine Ottis

Paradise Tesla

Evil D!ck. Ice Tea

I saw ... in this order: Red Cross, D.O.A., and The Circle Jerks at The Ritz in NYC, 1985.

I actually left in the middle of the CJ set. I was there to see D.O.A.

I know. That song came out the summer I turned sixteen and got my first car. That album was the soundtrack to my first summer of freedom. So it's on my list not because it's great, but because it brings back great memories.

You are going to prison for five years, solitary confinement. You get one CD, with space for ten songs. That's it.

What songs are you putting on your disk? Specify version or cover if you wish.

rock - pop - Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, U2, Pink Floyd, all great stuff.

But in the context of this situation, this song is #1. I listen to it every day in that cell - it fuels me to stay alive, fuels me to stay strong, and helps me envision the demise of those who have put me here.

Almost impossible to name a "top 10" of all time given the number of musical genres out there, and the way that my musical tastes have changed over the years. It would really be better to limit it by decade or by genre (or both). Nonetheless, below is my shot at this. It is really a list of favorites v. the 10 best songs of all time, but here are 10 songs that NEVER get skipped when they get played on my iPod (in no particular order) or on our home theatre system, regardless of who is in the room:

Solsbury Hill (Live version) - Peter Gabriel

Tipatina - The Joe Krown Trio (originally performed by Professor Longhair)

Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney

The Boxer -- Simon and Garfunkel

Mr. Jones - Counting Crows

Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (Live version from Hammersmith Odeon Theatre)

Doctor My Eyes - Jackson Browne

Vincent Black Lightning 1952 - Richard Thompson

Fred Jones, Part 2 - Ben Folds

Under Pressure -- David Bowie and Queen

Honorable mention to This is Why We Fight -- The Decemberists

Also, if you ask me this same question tomorrow, I might have a completely different list.
