NewbieJr 541 Posted July 25, 2013 Not exactly sure how to classify every genre of songs, so excuse me if you feel a song listed isn't technically 'alt-rock'. This is basically a 90's rock poll that excludes hair metal like Poison and Motley Crue and Grunge like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Anyway, which is your favorite of these ten selections? This only goes up to E in the alphabet. There will be more songs from this genre later.

NewbieJr 541 Posted July 25, 2013 If you're picking a Bush song There are a few better and more popular songs off that album than come down. I'm sure the same could be said for every band I put in any poll. That's the great thing about music.
The Moz 69 Posted July 25, 2013 I'm sure the same could be said for every band I put in any poll. That's the great thing about music. Okay, I just thought Machine Head and Glycerine were by far the most popular songs of that album.

mmmmm...beer 790 Posted July 25, 2013 I went with the fat little bumblebee girl song... it very much reminds me of a pretty hawt chick i was seeing at the time and the innocence of a new infatuation when your young. Oh and the tons of the schex we perpetrated together. That little song brings a smile to my face whenever it comes on... ahhh... freshman year of colludge. NewbieJr 541 Posted July 25, 2013 Why aren't we doing the list from the 00's? That's not off the table. I'm not going anywhere. But the 90's was getting worse and worse with each year. I thought maybe a few polls in between, with some handpicked decent songs, might be a fresh idea.
Big Blue 06 195 Posted July 25, 2013 Some decent, but not great, songs in this list. I went with Linger by the Cranberries. Very pretty song.
cbfalcon 825 Posted July 25, 2013 I really liked Bush's Sixteen Stone. One of my favorites from the decade. Everything Zen, Little Things, Comedown, Machinehead, Glycerine.....all big hits. I always think of Glycerine as being the biggest hit, but Machinehead was my personal favorite. That guitar riif is still awesome to me.

Saw them in concert last summer, was at a smaller type place, maybe 2000 people. Never seen a band from the 90s live before, they were pretty good. STP is starting a tour with the lead singer from Linkin Park, they kicked Scott out of the band again, he's a nitwit.
NewbieJr 541 Posted July 25, 2013 The opening bass riff of Comedown is almost identical to Living on a Prayer from Bonjovi. My band used to do Comedown, and one night while practicing, I started in singing ♪ ♫ ♪ "Tommy used to work on the docks". ♪ ♫ ♪ We laughed and laughed. Obviously nobody follows up something like Sixteen Stone with as many sales, but Razorblade Suitcase had: Swallowed (#1 on Modern Rock charts) Mouth (#5) Greedy Fly (#3) Cold Contagious (#23) Those numbers may be true, but Sixteen Stone had five songs that 90% of the average rock fan know and still get played today, while Swallowed and Greedy Fly are the only ones from Razorblade Suitcase that get any airplay these days. Plus, I'll bet that the majority of people don't even know Mouth or Cold Contagious. It was a huge dropoff from Sixteen Stone.

Of course their first album was their biggest. But for anyone to say it was one album, then they fell "right off the cliff" is ridiculous. You yourself said 2 songs post Sixteen Stone still get airplay almost 20 years later. And another handful were hits at the time. Sixteen Stone - Peaked at #4. 6x Platinum in US, 6x Platinum in Canda Razorblade Suitcase - Peaked at #1. 3x Platinum in US, 5x Platinum in Canada. Science of Things - Peaked at #11. Little Rusty 17 Posted July 25, 2013 Even though I'm a big Collective Soul fan, I voted for Blind Melon's "No Rain"........timeless epic fun song Other faves.... "Shine" "Linger" (the fart song) "Higher" "Loser"

If those other songs were really good i would of thought I would of herd of them more. Not saying they weren't but I guess in that time period I just didn't like there other stuff. That said I think Hootie sold a lot on their second album but doesn't change the fact it sucked. Alanis had a bigger album than Hottie and Bush together and fell off a cliff. JT 137 Posted July 25, 2013 I do not understand how a person can have a MEGA album like Jagged Little Pill then basically never be heard from again. That album was a greatest hits album I think like 7 songs were top 5. Seems to happen to female artists more than male. Discussed with friends before. Consensus, which may or may not be valid, is that their demographic is so fragile. Young girls that formed their core audience tend to be very flighty with their fandom. At the risk of sounding like GFIAFP, you gotta get them during their early tweens and captivate them through their very early teens. Young guys who picked up on the album all the girls loved (because they want girls) drift away as soon as the core female demo does. Or maybe that's not it at all.
