I hate these early drafts...what to do at #5?

Recommended Posts

At first, I loved having the #5 pick in a 10-teamer PPR draft...either take a top 5 RB or Calvin. With injury situation to Foster, Charles and now Martin, I'm afraid Calvin won't even be there for me at 5.

My previous ranking:

AP

Martin

Charles

Foster

CJ Spiller/Calvin (I planned on deciding between these two if they were both available)

Now I have them ranked:

AP

CJ Spiller

Calvin

McCoy

Forte

I would hate to draft one of the injured RB's, I'll draft Calvin if he's still there.

How would you rank the top if you were going into a draft this afternoon? Does the Foster/Charles/Martin injuries scare anyone off or would you still take one of them?

I'd not allow the injuries to Charles scare me at all. Foster - with all the carries/dropping ypc/injury issues would give me pause. Martin - well its hard to say. He got his bell rung pretty good (I think it was payback for the Brady hit). That said I'd still not draft Forte or McCoy over Martin.

AP

Martin

Charles

Spiller

Calvin

McCoy

Foster

Lynch

Forte

Btw - this is hardly an 'early' draft. I've been drafting various dynasty leagues since June :)

Apparently Martin says he's OK and didn't get a concussion, but it certainly didn't look good on the replay. Is he just saying that so he can play? The Bucs let him talk to the media after the game, don't that would happen if he did indeed get concussed!

"He got his bell rung pretty good (I think it was payback for the Brady hit)."

Martin actually did this to himself, he tried to block a defender and went low to the defenders knees, which hit him in the head pretty good.

I didn't see it. Was hoping karma came back and bit Shiano in his pr!cknose as retaliation for all the bush league BS he's pulled since hired.

Karma still comes into play...yeah, I hate that coach as well.

Haven't seen anything on Charles, but Martin is OK.

I'd be cautious about passing up a Top 5 RB for Calvin. In the 2nd, you could be facing someone like boom or bust CJ2K, or S Jax as your RB1 which I don't like at this stage of his career and in a PPR where probably Jacquizz is going to play 3rd downs. Thats a pretty big drop from Martin, Charles, Spiller or McCoy. I'd rather take one of those and assuming Calvin is gone at #15, have options like AJ Green, Marshall, D Thomas or Dez.

Charles or Spiller if they're there. Otherwise Calvin. If all three were somehow gone, and AP would be gone too of course, then Foster or Martin.

I'd probably still take Martin top 3 personally, but it wouldn't kill you to pass on him over concussion worries.

The draft went AP, Charles, Martin, Spiller...I had my choice of Foster and Calvin...went Calvin. Probably should have taken Foster, but I'm not that high on him with all the mileage and Houston working Tate in more, not too mention I didn't want to waste an early pick on Tate. BTW - the owner who took Foster tried to hold off on Tate and didn't get him as he went in the 9th rd.

I'm still happy with my RB's (this being a PPR league), Sproles, McFadden, Wilson and Vereen.

will you never know whom or when someone will get hurt ..but i would still have foster in that mix .at five for me if i have the 5th pick its going to be a rb

At 5 in a PPR I'd still have taken a RB. Not because I don't like Megatron but because WR is so deep that you'd have a better chance at making up the difference between WR than you would/do at RB when you miss a top 10-12 RB. Personal preference I guess.

Basically: you could have taken cjs or jc @5 & had a real chane at landing a top 5-6 wr on the return.

My plan, which is doomed to fail, is to casually mention during the pre-draft festivities (aka, drinking) that both the Tampa Trib and Tampa Bay Times just ran pieces that very morning suggesting Martin's injury is far worse than previously reported and could, in fact, be fatal. With any luck, and enough beer, Martin will fall to me at five. Or not.

Don't disagree. I wouldn't have drafted Foster either. Now he has a back problem to go with anything else. Good luck!

If you looked at who I said was taken in the top 4, then no, I couldn't have had Spiller or Charles...if they were there, I would have taken one of them.

Also, we can start 3-WR...Calvin was the top ranked player in our scoring last year, more than AP by a few points, and he only had 5 TD's, I would think that would go up.

I've read it multiple times & I guess I still don't understand. Must be the beer. :dunno:

I just received an e-mail form footballguys.com, looks like Foster's back issue is worse than originally thought, glad I stayed away.

I don't think so. Your receivers are going to make or break you though. I wouldn't be too pessimistic though with that squad. Just be active in the WW and you can easily be in contention later on

Not a bad team at all. Only real criticism is you are lacking in RB and especially WR depth. Not sure why you'd take six combined QB/TEs and not get at least a fifth receiver. That must have been the drink. But not too shabby overall.

I'm in another league, this one a 12-teamer, and was given the #5 spot again...I ended up taking Charles, Foster was taken 2nd. Pretty happy how this turned out.

I cant believe Rice is not mentioned once in this convo

I've been learning towards him now with the Foster news causing Charles and Spiller to go before me. I don't like anyone else's upside enough to pass on Rice's stability (if that makes any sense). My other choice now is to possibly go Megaton.
