How many bench spots?

Recommended Posts

How many bench spots in your league? We are having a league debate at current time. We are a 12 teamer with 8 bench spots? A quick reply just so I can do an average would be perfect.

Three... any more is a sign of a weak league :pointstosky:

The above statement is a patently ridiculous. In fact, having played in probably 50 different leagues of all types, I would argue that the exact opposite is true. With a three player bench, owners need to do nothing more than to use their free agent list/waiver wire as an extension of their 'bench'.

The fact is, though. that it really doesn't matter how many bench spot your league has. However, the more bench spots, generally the more complex your league will be. Waiver pick-ups by necessity, need to become more speculative and more pre-emptive. Much depends on how your league feels about their desire to research that many more players.

I've found that typical 12 team redraft league formats generally have between 6 and 8 bench spots. In one of my redraft leagues, we have 8 bench spots and in another we have 7. In my two deep keeper leagues, one has 7 and the other (my only 10 team league) has 10 bench spots plus one IR slot. As you might expect, my dynasty leagues have even deeper benches. Warriors has a 12 player bench plus 2 IR slots, Fat Bastards has a 10 player bench, plus 2 IR slots, in addition to a 5 player inactive developmental squad that generally consists of 10 - 12 college developmental players. BTW, in all leagues with IR slots, the IR rules exactly mirror the NFL IR rules.

More than one league member has said that playing in this type of league is like the difference between playing chess and playing checkers.

So it really boils down to is what type of league your owners want. There just is no 'happy medium' and no 'right' answer. It depends on how your league feels about wanting to research more players to scour for the waiver wire gems, as opposed to being able to more freely access the waiver wire to pick up a player when you need one. One thing I would point out: leagues with deeper benches generally encourage more trading, because it is harder to meet a team's needs for quality players at a particular position when most of them are already rostered. So leagues that like more trading will generally want to have deeper benches.

Exactly. Actually, they require more trading. There is far more owner interaction and involvement. But if you're a weak negotiator I can understand why you would prefer a shallow bench. Doesn't take much intellectual firepower to negotiate a deal with the waiver wire.

Im playing in a 12 team 2 QB league that plays 2 rb's, 3 wr's, 1 te, a flex spot, kicker, and a defense and we only have 6 freaking bench spots. I mentioned to the commish during the draft that I think we should get at least one more bench spot being we've got an additional 2 roster spots (qb and flex). I got laughed at and now the commish is dealing with multiple injuries (Cobb, Wayne) as well as bye week blues this week. Serves him right.

Anywho, anyone else play in a 2 QB league? If so how many bench spots do you get?

zOMG I was joking... LOL :bench:

Since the guy was obviously asking a serious question, what purpose is served by giving him a smart a$$ answer then? You could be a real asset to this board if you just made positive contributions when you have something to contribute.

I actually joined an 8 team league last year because I liked the different roster setup. We start 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE, 2 Flex, 2 DEF, 2 Kickers, and a Head Coach. So 16 starting spots and we have a 7 player bench. Things get pretty tough/tight at times due to injuries and bye weeks. You basically have to roster a 3rd QB and sometimes a 3rd TE, then the other 5 spots are likely RB's/WR's. Defenses and kickers pretty much become expendable on bye weeks unless you have a top 3 defense and can afford to drop someone else.

Remember you posted this once before. Great idea. As a Commish, may try something like this next season. Although, noticed #1, 8 were duplicated. Hows about long FG?

we run a three man bench, that is a serious answer

I then made a joke, only half serious, since it was also a shot at lightening up this seriousatorium a little bit... scuse me.

I agree with the deeper bench fosters more competition and higher trade rate...which is exactly why our bottom dwellers are planning a vote against deeper benches and blind bidding next year. We use a democracy, but it seems ridiculous to vote for something strictly to add an advantage. They would like a shallow bench and a worst to first waiver system...

Focking socialists

start 9, 5 bench, 1 IR.

prefer a smaller bench it prevents hoarding players most teams won't even use and makes roster decisions more challenging.

14 team

9 starters

6 bench

roster position limits

3 QB's

4 RB's

4 WR's

2 TE's

2 Flex

2 Kick

2 DEF

Now you can have up to 10 RB's & WR's combined but 2 of them would need to be marked as FLEX or your lineup is illegal. Finally, we are limited to 3 transactions per week.

We do a similar weekly bonus with a few extras, smallest margin of victory, higest losing score, most sacks, best backfield (RB duo), best wiaver wire start. You can get creative with the bonuses, we used to draw them out of a hat at the draft.

Bench 7

17 roster spots

Start 10

1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB,WR,TE), Def, K

No IR

We've carried 1-2 IR spots in the past, but since ours is not a keeper or dynasty league, we voted to get rid of IR. Teams ended up abusing the IR and would not take off players in a timely manner once upgraded. This has opened up the ww a bit.
