penultimatestraw 473 Posted July 10, 2015 A question was recently posed. Faced with a life or death consequence, which would you rather fight, in the ocean, with the intention of staying alive, a great white shark or giant squid? Why? I'll take my chances with the squid. Fun fact: The only known predator of giant squids is the sperm whale, which coincidentally was my nickname in college.
phillybear 366 Posted July 10, 2015 I'll take my chances with the squid. Fun fact: The only known predator of giant squids is the sperm whale, which coincidentally was my nickname in college. The problem with the squid is that it's highly intelligent, has a beak for biting, those suction cup things, and I'm pretty sure it can choke you out faster than Michael Hutchence. Cruzer 1,995 Posted July 10, 2015 The great white... Re: As fast, strong and mobile as the GW is, it's noting compared to a giant squid. Also it's been shown that if you show a bit of aggression and face a GW - it will not attack. A GS - that thing is like lightening, and it has a gazillion arms to grab you with. Artista 460 Posted July 10, 2015 Both, at the same time, head on! Kind of am right now in a sense. The "shark" is causing my pain while the "squid" is causing discomfort by squeezing and twisting sensations.

Showing aggression is not easy towards a shark is not easy. Some have supposedly survived by punching a shark in the nose. I question this because how much force can someone generate throwing a punch underwater. The fist is traveling in slow motion.

RLLD 4,143 Posted July 10, 2015 I saw a video of a squid killing a shark.....they are badass....those humbolts are nasty
Frozenbeernuts 2,101 Posted July 10, 2015 As fast and agile as a seal is, it usually doesnt escape from a great white once they are in close proximity to each other. You do have a better chance against a great white however if both animals are intent on eating you. The Ampullae of Lorenzini are incredibly sensitive. I have seen a great white put into a trance before by rubbing this area. If you punch it with enough force, yes thats difficult under water, the shark will probably back off. Djgb13 2,339 Posted July 10, 2015 As other posters said I would fight the shark. At least you have some strategy of fighting a shark. What's your strategy of fight the squid? Let it strangle you?

MDC 7,082 Posted July 10, 2015 Swim away, as it probably wouldn't attack in the first place? Yep. The GS isn't going to attack you in the first place. Assuming the GW and GS are going to attack though I'd rather go shark. At least then you're just worried about the mouth. The squid has hooklike "teeth" in it's suckers and a bird beak, not to mention a longer reach. F that.

Djgb13 2,339 Posted July 10, 2015 Swim away, as it probably wouldn't attack in the first place? The question is which would you rather fight? Here we are assuming the situation you are being forced to fight them and they are fighting you.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted July 10, 2015 The question is which would you rather fight? Here we are assuming the situation you are being forced to fight them and they are fighting you. Agreed. The likelihood of you having to face one over the other is inconsequential - it's just which of the two assuming the circumstances were equal.

If they both were trying, I'd pick the one that would kill me the least painfully: the shark.

Giants Fan 85 Posted July 11, 2015 K ... Here is your first problem. Great White, is carcharadon carcharius, a very specific animal. "Giant squid" is not. They do exist, and there are known living species. Architeuthus is one such animal. However, the scars on some whales are larger than the suckers for Architeuthus and there is some argument that there is a LARGER living "giant squid". Here is the thing, if a giant squid gets you, you are gonna be about 50 feet underwater in like 2 seconds. So, given that IF it instantly gets bored of you and lets you go, which it prolly wont, very intelligent animal, with excellent eyesight, you gotta swim to the surface,,and then survive the bends. Where as a Great White is most likely gonna just taste you, realize you are not a seal and let you go. So, easy choice. Great White.
Giants Fan 85 Posted July 11, 2015 Trust me, if this thing wants to drag you down to it's lair and play with it's new toy .... you are stone cold focked!

Giants Fan 85 Posted July 11, 2015 I thought this was assumed to be a fight to the death? Well you are pretty much fawked either way then. Either one of those animals really goes after a human in the water ... zero chance. Here is the thing though. Like an octopus, a squid has 8 arms, but it also has two tentacles. The tentacles shoot out, grab prey,,and then drag it to the beak where it is eaten. Yer gonna be 50 feet underwater so fast, you would prolly pass out. I guess, given that either way the thing is gonna fight me to the death, prolly take the squid. Be over faster and less painfull. But if you actually wanted a chance to live ... great white. penultimatestraw 473 Posted July 11, 2015 Giant squid eat whales. So do great whites. Then again, whales eat both. So I'd rather fight either of those aquapvssies than a killer whale.
Giants Fan 85 Posted July 11, 2015 Do you realize how much smarter a cephalopod is than a fish? Some people say that if cephalopods lived to be 100 years old, they would be the smartest creatures on Earth, not humans. As it is, the Giant Pacific Octopus only lives to be about 5 years old. 20 years, would be a really long lifespan for a cephalopod.

Giants Fan 85 Posted July 11, 2015 Also of interest, while, the human body could likely never withstand the velocity required to travel at near light speeds, getting too close to a star, the gravity would crush us,,invertebrates like cephalopods could possibly survive some, really heavy g forces. They may be the greatest hope for the planet Earth, in a post Earth world.
