When do you drop the bench

Recommended Posts

Have A Rodgers and K Cousins as my QB's. Trade deadline has passed. At this point I'm really not going to bench Rodgers, even though his schedule isn't the best down the stretch. Probably not going to play Cousins, want to drop him and use his spot to stash another WR or RB. But damned sure don't want to give another team an upgrade at QB...so the question is, when to drop? Thoughts?

Obviously your biggest concern is if you drop Cousins, someone picks him up, and Rogers gets hurt for the FF Playoffs. Then, depending on your league structure, you could be leaning on Jay Cutler at best. The Skins go Eagles, Panthers, Bears in weeks 14-16. Cousins should still be solid.

(Edit: With the depth at QB, I'm not sure you have much worry about someone upgrading a great deal at their QB spot, but they could. In my league I can see the Manning owners wanting to POSSIBLY upgrade, but maybe not even there. He might be an upgrade over Russell Wilson or Stafford. Not over Winston as he has NO twice. If you are weak at RB, WR or TE it is worth the stash, otherwise, it seems wise to hold Cousins.)

yeah, the injury thing would probably end me anyway, my team has been pretty dependent on Rodgers anyway due to a weakness at WR. I like to hoard RB/WR late in the season and am having trouble letting go of Cousins, and I'm not really sure why. Just trying to get a feel for the way er'body else manages the roster down the stretch.

who are the best available QBs on the waiver wire currently? would Cousins be exponentially better than what a rival team could just pick up for free?

also, who would you be picking up while dropping Cousins?

That's the number one question , who are you looking at to pick up if you drop Cousians

There is no doubt he will be picked up.

Here are the guys available:

Ryan Tannehill, Mia QB
Trevor Siemian, Den QB
Sam Bradford, Min QB
Carson Wentz, Phi QB
Case Keenum, LA QB
Brock Osweiler, Hou QB
Alex Smith, KC QB
Ryan Fitzpatrick, NYJ QB
Colin Kaepernick, SF QB
Cody Kessler, Cle QB

I consider him a pretty big upgrade over those, and there are at least a couple of teams who don't even have a top 15 GB on their roster, so they'd likely jump at the chance.

RB's out there: Dixon, Starks, D Washington (DET), and Dion Lewis (who I just dropped in favor of Rawls).

WR's:

Jeremy Maclin, KC WR Q
Sterling Shepard, NYG WR
Ted Ginn Jr., Car WR
Marqise Lee, Jax WR
Adam Humphries, TB WR
Pierre Garcon, Wsh WR
Eli Rogers, Pit WR

Of that list, I'm actually highest (for this week) on Rogers, especially if Coates, Wheaton and Heyward-Bey are out. But I like Starks in the longer term.

The guy who you dropped Lewis is the best pickup of that group.

While I agree, I'm not sure that he's going to get his gig back. White has performed well enough and Blount is a freaking TD machine. Lasts year White was ineffective, but not so this year.

Keep Cousins. He's a decent starter and you don't know what will happen in the future.

RB/WR depth isn't really any more important than QB depth. In fact I would argue in many cases it's not as important.

If you have to replace one they are easy to drop and get someone serviceable about any week.

If Rodgers goes down a week or two you don't want to have to drop the same RB/WR and be stuck with Case Keenum.

White as been good I agree

But he hasn't been as good as Lewis was last season.

And I agree with polecatt , if you don't like Lewis who is the best pick up from that list then keep Cousians

I agree with advice given here. You should definitely have two qbs. You never know.

If you are in the playoff hunt, then always keep QB insurance. Cousins is solid enough to give you a chance if Rodgers goes down....and remember what he did down the stretch last year.

Yea there is sh!t on your FA wire. I wouldn't drop your backup QB for any of them.

Now your backup TE...

White has been ok, not great. If you can drop a kicker or whatever to hold Lewis, you might

His debut should be this week

i started after all my byes. i'm really just handcuffing my RBs and trying to stack defenses that have a favorable schedule.

i'm still holding two qbs though. sad part is somebody dropped winston this week and i'm going to drop bortles and hold on to kaep. Never thought i'd say that.....

Person in my league traded Carr now only has Dak and no serviceable qbs on the wire. another had to pick up osweiler for bye week fill in for rivers. Guy with Dak is in second place. I picked up Romo just to block him in case of injury. My point is if you are going to make the playoffs then my thought process is about improving my slot and blocking those above me from valuable handcuffs while solidifying my own.

Winston has New Orleans twice (weeks 14 and 16). Might be a very interesting pick up for somebody. Evans has to be the number one fantasy playoff WR by a mile.

12 Teams yes.... 10 Teams NO!

12 Teams definitely KEEP Cousins. (this looks like the OP case...other QBs out there are garbage)

10 Teams drop him if you need room... there will be other quality QBs.

Exactly. I've been mulling over the same thing these past few weeks, having Brees as my starter and Taylor as his backup. If I lose Brees, can I win a championship with Taylor? Is Taylor above and beyond anything available on the WW?

I'm in a 12 team league, so the answers to the above questions for me: Yes and Yes. IMO, a FF championship can be won with a guy like Cousins, considering the guy has proven he can put up huge numbers from time to time.

First off, you have to look at what is available should you need a QB.

The list you gave is all bottom half at this point. Keenum has been replaced.

Second, what is the likelihood someone will pickup Cousins should you drop him. Take a glance.

Is possible he may just sit there. Is a chance.

Next is how likely is the player you pickup going to be worth a spot on your roster.

Of our list of WR only two I would consider.

Shephard and Rogers

Maclin has a Groin injury and has multiple goose eggs. Too much risk for the not enough value.

Shephard appears to be a consistent score.

Rogers has potential, but may need Coates to be out to be of real value.

Again, I see too much risk for any other WR on your list.

Last, is a chance that other teams may drop a WR/RB to pickup Cousins. Always a chance.

But the chance may be at not having anything for QB.

So I made some roster moves. Kept Cousins as a "just in case" and because I didn't really like Rodgers schedule down stretch. I ended up leaving Dion Lewis on WW and added Prosise, Thomas Rawls and Robert Kelley earlier in the week in the WW run. Suddenly my team looks like a monster!

You gotta explain to me, Craw.....how are those guys on the wire?

BTW: Congrats - You just hit the jackpot.

It's kind of a combination of things. We have some guys who aren't going to make the playoffs and aren't as active with their teams anymore so there's a little more on ww than usual. Prosise was drafted and had been owned the entire season. On the week he was supposed to be the starter he crapped the bed and the owner sent him to the ww. He had his 1st big week sitting on WW. Then the Seahawks sent Michael packing and I had a fairly high waiver priority and used it to get Prosise, then woke up at 4:00 a.m. and grabbed Rawls as a just in case. I had grabbed R Kelley the week before, didn't even have to use waiver priority on him, just a FA claim.

Now sitting on: D. Murray, L. Miller, M Forte (all of who I drafted), T Rawls and R Kelley in my RB stable. Wish I had one more open spot because I'd like to stash Lewis or Starks, who are both still out there.
