Wife beater under t-shirt ... Why?

I see guys wearing a tank top / wife beater beneath their t shirt. This seems to be a blue collar city thing but I've seen it in NYC and Boston too.

 

Any idea wtf you'd wear a t shirt beneath a t shirt? Just wondering and this seemed like the forum to ask.

I wear your typical white cotton v neck undershirt beneath dress shirts but that serves a purpose. It keeps sweat off your shirt.

 

Why would you be sweating it care if you are if you're in a t shirt? And since a tank doesn't cover your pits anyway it's not doing much.

I wear snug white haines shirts under clothes in the winter for another layer. Under golf shirts if it is on the chilly side. Or dress shirts.

Okay in my playing days and pickup days I always wore one.

 

Especially playing basketball I hated the feel of sleeves hanging on my arms. Once they got sweaty I just didn't like the feel. So I always cut my shirts into tank tops that had huge arm holes.

Then it just felt better to have that light second layer underneath and it also helped absorbs sweat.

Occasionally, whilst I was in Houston in the throes of the dog days of Summer humidity,

if I was dressing nice, I'd wear a colored T under a button down.

And, if it was horribly humid, I'd wear a tighter whitey T underneath all that.

Strictly for sweat absorption. But, if you're not covering your pits and don't have moobs, what's the point?

Maybe but if you're wearing an undershirt it will absorb the sweat and it's not visible if it's v neck. If you're not wearing a t shirt and it's hot you'll have a visibly sweaty dress shirt.

I wear a pwt under a t-shirt. Tuck in the whitey, untuck the t-shirt. It does soak up sweat so you don't have wet spots on your outershirt.
