gardenstatepkwy 5 Posted August 27, 2017 So I've been doing a lot of my mocks on Yahoo since thats where my leagues are. After each mock they assign you a letter grade based on how you picked. I had a couple of mocks yesterday where I felt I drafted pretty good teams and got D's and F's. I know Yahoo mocks are assuming the league is standard scoring but it shouldn't punish a PPR minded team that much. So I guess my question is: are these teams that bad or is the Yahoo draft grading about right? If it's me that's off I want to make adjustments before my real drafts. I draft with a 1.0 PPR / 6 pt per TD pass mindset. This team got an F and I considered this one of my better mocks yesterday. I drafted out of the 4 slot in a 10 team mock: 1. LeSean McCoy (Buf - RB) 2. Michael Thomas (NO - WR) 3. Brandin Cooks (NE - WR) 4. Drew Brees (NO - QB) 5. Joe Mixon (Cin - RB) 6. Jamison Crowder (Was - WR) 7. Bilal Powell (NYJ - RB) 8. DeVante Parker (Mia - WR) 9. Zach Ertz (Phi - TE) 10. Stefon Diggs (Min - WR) 11. Pierre Garcon (SF - WR) 12. Jamaal Williams (GB - RB) 13. Frank Gore (Ind - RB) 14. Theo Riddick (Det - RB) 15. Atlanta (Atl - DEF)
brotherbock 349 Posted August 27, 2017 The lower Yahoo grades me, the more comfortable I am with my draft. One league last year, my F grade won me the ship. (You know, plus a lot of work in the season too, but significant draft work). I'm worried this year in my keeper league, they gave me a B :/
cotarice12 18 Posted August 27, 2017 Yeah, I tried a few and I had to quit doing them. My competitive juices got the best of me and I started drafting just to get a good grade by Yahoo, lol. My best drafts were rated D or F when I drafted the teams I was happy with. The problem is that they grade it based on their ADP and projected points, and I think their projected points are way off on quite a few guys, so I take them and get graded worse for it. It's useful to see how others are drafting, and where some cut-off points are, and if you do auction drafts it can be interesting to see how much people are willing to bid early, but that's it. I find fantasypros mock drafting to be more on target, but not perfect. Plus you can run one through in about 5 minutes.

They are also slooooooooow on the uptake. I grabbed Kareem Hunt in the 8th round yesterday (5 player keeper league, keepers in the first 5, so really more like rnd 3), and I had to scroll alllllllllthe way down the RB list to find Hunt. And, you'll like this, looking at draft grades after, one guy's team was light on WR talent, so Yahoo said "You might want to look at the Best Available WRs"...#1, Boldin. So take those ADPs with a big grain of salt.
Hawkeye21 2,378 Posted August 27, 2017 I enjoy reading them because I find them funny but they are just ridiculous. If they gave me an A grade I would be concerned because that means my team is crap. Last year the guy that got the highest grade finished last. He draft a two TEs in the first three rounds and they gave him an A. This year he drafts Elliott and they gave him an A again. I got a C the last two years. It seems if you don't draft a back up QB and TE they don't like your team. They also don't seem to like rookies.
We Tigers 71 Posted August 27, 2017 It's calculated based on your points scored for every week and the projected record you've had in the league as a result. So, if you don't have a backup tight end and back up QB, or if you don't pick up a kicker or defense until just before week 1, you'll get a terrible grade. My backup QB has a bye the same week as my starter (my 'backup' is Winston who is starting for Luck for now, and I'll figure out that bye week later), I have no backup K, DEF, or TE, and they gave me a B. They also go with ADP pretty heavily.
himmystyles 30 Posted August 27, 2017 CBS, a league we pay for, isn't any better. Took DJ at 1 in our ppr and this was part of my draft recap: However, you mixed in some (minor) duds as well, the worst of whom was David Johnson, taken 2 spots ahead of what his projections suggest.

If taking DJ at #1 was the worst mistake you made in the draft, I'd love to see the rest AB in the 5th round would be a 'slight reach' for these sites. With that said, I just did my first mock of the year on yahoo and got an A w/ only one QB,TE,K & DEF on the roster.

Atlanta (Atl - DEF) FWIW if this is your team for a 10-team PPR i kinda agree with Yahoo lol Personally i would never take Brees at his current ADP so that's probably why i don't like it. Rodgers or Brady in the 4th, maybe, but not Brees who i see as a slight drop off from those 2. Pass on Brees and you can wait on guys like Carr, Cam, Mariota etc.

Atlanta (Atl - DEF) yahoo is stupid. It seems like almost every year after our teams actual draft, Yahoo rates me at a D or an F and every year I am in the top 3 or 4. all the grade means is that you did not pick based on the yahoo projections and their projections are terrible. It's something to look at and laugh, but I wouldnt worry that Yahoo doesnt like your picks. It means NOTHING.

Not to side with Yahoo and not judging your draft good or bad, and I'm sure their simple program didn't analyze it this way. But Big Ben is a trap player. You pick him and think "Yeah, 5 TD games are coming!" And then you only remember later the bunches of bad games that are masked by the 5 TD games. Or the games where this huge dude is hurt, again. And Baldwin is the only WR on that list that I'd be really afraid of in a matchup. Kelvin and Fitz can get theirs to be sure. But your WRs aren't as scary as your RBs. Murray/McCoy/Hunt (and maybe Murray/McCoy/Martin later) would scare me. But at QB and WR, less scary. Odds are you're going to win more than 2, of course. But I've had seasons where I've been staring at a lineup like that and feeling good, and couldn't buy a win to save my life.

So, if you don't have a backup tight end and back up QB, or if you don't pick up a kicker or defense until just before week 1, you'll get a terrible grade. This is generally true as I never take a K or DST in any draft ever. I generally prefer to stream both positions and would rather draft and stash lottery tickets and wait on injuries/suspensions/trades/whatever to shake out before adding a K and DST a few days before Week 1. And naturally, Yahoo will always crap on my drafts for these reasons and for taking a bunch of no names. Every year I get the "robbing the cradle" mention on my recap. I employed the same exact strategy this year that I do every year and was somehow awarded an A and got best draft in my 14 teamer.
beercat 5 Posted August 29, 2017 The draft grades are ridiculous. Team drafted 2 QBs in the first 3 rounds a kicker in the 6th and received an A. Team was projected to go 13-0 and then was an 8pt underdog for week 1.

I think they go by projected fantasy points for the whole roster. unfortunately, if you have 3 QB, only one of them will score any points for you, so you could have the best backup QB's in the world, but that wont help your bottom line. (other than the bye week) but Yahoo will give you a better grade for it.
