It’s going to happen; question is, how quickly. I had hoped we would have gotten nuclear fusion working for generation of electricity by now. They’re still working towards it of course, but haven’t figured out how to make it reliable and practical yet… Yeah, I'm sure he was talking about 20 years from now. Anyway, your fusion comment reminds me that I'm taking a class at ASU about the People and Physics behind the atomic bomb. Quite fascinating, and I'm learning a bunch about the physics of fission, fusion, alpha radiation (aka helium nuclei), etc.

The “cleaner” the better but you don’t cut one off until you can fully supplement what’s lost and at a close cost to the consumer. And you never want to be beholden to other countries for it. And we have an example, California. They closed coal and natural gas powered plants and replaced them with renewable energy. They ended out with rolling blackouts because the grid couldn’t handle it. I am not willing to lower my standard of living for some BS environmental theory.
Reality 3,043 Posted November 7, 2022 Almost feel like Democrats are focking with us at this point, they can't be this bad at campaigning... Maybe they're trying to truly find out how focking stupid their base is? Makes no sense...

Maybe they're trying to truly find out how focking stupid their base is? Makes no sense... That is odd. Because the only reason they have a base is because of stupid people that keep buying into this crap, over and over and over again. They don't even try to get the smart people to vote for them. They have plenty of numbers without them.

It’s almost like they believe what the scientists say, about how we won’t have a habitable planet if we don’t cut back on carbon emissions. However, coal is definitely more expensive than wind/solar in the long term. One of the biggest costs of coal is the cleanup after the mining. It’s so expensive that coal companies, which are required to do the cleanup, are selling the mining permits to other companies that will do the cleanup for them. And then those companies are now going bankrupt trying to do so. And then taxpayers pay for the cleanup. https://www.npr.org/2022/10/29/1127520991/west-virginia-coal-mining-alpha Honestly, I don’t have a problem with the language Biden’s using, because it’s well past time to look at this with a sense of urgency. It was primarily an economic decision; I figured the price of the car, the EV tax credits, price of gas, price of charging and expected maintenance and realized I’d come out ahead after only 3 years. I plug it in at home to charge. Maintenance cost has been lower than my original expectation. Gas price spikes have no effect on my life anymore. The acceleration, even on my cheap VW one, is outstanding. I wouldn’t want to go back to a gas-powered car again.

Curious, what is the repalcement cost for new batteries when the originals give up the ghost? Is there any way to tell how much useful life they have left? Baker Boy 1,647 Posted November 7, 2022 https://www.newscientist.com/article/2317274-china-is-building-more-than-half-of-the-worlds-new-coal-power-plants/ China is building more than half of the world's new coal power plants Some 176 gigawatts of coal capacity was under construction in 2021, and more than half of that was being built in China Quote Nearly 200 countries pledged a “phasing down” of coal at the COP26 climate summit last year. But figures from a report by the non-profit Global Energy Monitor show that is nowhere near being realised yet. Globally, the number of coal power stations is actually growing as new constructions more than offset the closure of old plants.

I don’t know what the replacement cost would be. Car is almost 7 years old and I’m not seeing a noticeable degradation in range yet. I’m reading that the batteries are likely to last 15 years... I’d want a new car by then anyway. 3 hours ago, Bert said: How about how they are going to dispose of 100s of millions of toxic batteries? Denmark started this project 6 years ago, there has to be a reason they are not implementing it in more cities in their country, and my guess is that is H2S. https://www.newscientist.com/article/2114761-worlds-first-city-to-power-its-water-needs-with-sewage-energy/ :edit: even without issues it only produces enough power to power itself and drinking water purification plant. However, I think this will be an issue that can be solved, if for no other reason than the metals that make up the batteries are quite expensive and rare in nature.
