Deathpool update: Gordon Lightfoot

Recommended Posts

Quote

When folk music ebbed in popularity, overwhelmed by the British invasion, Mr. Lightfoot began writing ballads aimed at a broader audience. He scored one hit after another, beginning in 1970 with the heartfelt “If You Could Read My Mind,” inspired by the breakup of his first marriage.

In quick succession he recorded the hits “Sundown, “Carefree Highway,” “Rainy Day People” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which he wrote after reading a Newsweek article about the sinking of an iron-ore carrier in Lake Superior in 1975, with the loss of all 29 crew members.

That song still makes me really uneasy. Haunting everything about it.

If you seen his recent Documentary you knew he wouldn't be around long. Love me some Gordon and may he travel the Care Free Highway.

It'd be tragic if he were somehow related to Lori.

Agreed.  Also haunting but in a beautiful way is "If you could read my mind."  Every time I hear it I think about how they don't write songs like that any more.

RIP Gordon, enjoy your Carefree Highway.

RIP

I have heard many of his songs hundreds of times, my Dad loved Gordon Lightfoot. I have them on various Spotify lists, Apple Music, etc and always love when they pop up. Legend.

He wrote some great songs and had the voice for them.

Last time I worked one of his shows, he did something I’d never seen a performer do.
During his set he took a minute to address the audience and then pulled out his billfold, and removed a piece of paper.
He then read the names of the musicians in his band.

RIP Gordon.

Some great songs to listen to at the right time and in the right place.

I still contend that "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" could be the worst song ever to get a lapdance to.  That or "Butterfly Kisses"

No matter what the original length of the song, they all get cut down to 3 minutes and change tops at the strip club.

In March 2010, Lightfoot changed a line during live performances to reflect new findings that there had been no crew error involved in the sinking.

Heard a podcast about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Being from Florida, I didn't never heard of it. Apparently it's notorious among yall Yankees.

I vaguely remember the song. The "crew error" I guess was changed because some hatches were later discovered to have been tied down. But not all of them per the podcast if I remember right. At the very least, captain error risking a horrific storm like that.

Echoes is the song Andrew Lloyd Weber ripped off when he wrote Phantom of The Opera.  He's such a hack.

Huh?  The lead singer thanks the band mates by name in every concert I’ve been to, and they don’t need to look at a piece of paper to remember their names.

I felt a spike of pain until I finished that sentence half a second later.
