That right wing hack paper the NY Times has confirmed parts of his testimony: Quote It is not clear if Mr. Weiss was convinced those strands of the investigation should be prosecuted or was simply making sure all potential charges were pursued thoroughly. But in mid-2022, Mr. Weiss reached out to the top federal prosecutor in Washington, Matthew Graves, to ask his office to pursue charges and was rebuffed, according to Mr. Shapley’s testimony. A similar request to prosecutors in the Central District of California, which includes Los Angeles, was also rejected, Mr. Shapley testified. A second former I.R.S. official, who has not been identified, told House Republicans the same story. That episode was confirmed independently to The New York Times by a person with knowledge of the situation. Of course, they buried it in the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/27/us/politics/irs-official-justice-dept-hunter-biden.html

What differentiates the left is their universal acceptance in using the massive power of government and mega wealthy corporations to punish those on the other side. They absolutely view their opponents as sub-human and show zero empathy towards anyone who would dare go against their beliefs. The right has some bad actors, the left's complete movement reeks of authoritarian rule with different rules for different people.

You seem to have stopped once you saw what you wanted, because, a bit farther down: Quote While Mr. Weiss had the authority to pursue leads that led to jurisdictions other than his own in Delaware, the department’s practices dictated that he secure the approval and cooperation of the U.S. attorneys in those districts before proceeding. If Mr. Weiss wanted to move ahead without their approval, he could have brought the issue to Mr. Garland’s attention, and the attorney general could then appoint him “special attorney,” which would allow him to bypass the standard chain of command. There is no indication that Mr. Weiss appealed for help from Mr. Garland or his top deputies — or that he even communicated about the case with anyone in leadership beyond the department’s top career official at headquarters. Weiss could have pushed harder or gone over the heads of the local US attorneys, but chose not to. Perhaps they discussed it and realized it wasn’t worthwhile. Maybe he personally decided the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. Either way, Weiss is the one who decided not to push it further. Look, we get it, this IRS guy Shapley wanted the DOJ to do something, and they said no. He didn’t like it, so now he’s “blowing the whistle” on them. That’s not wrongdoing - that’s a difference of opinion, and based on his position, it wasn’t his call. I’d be interested to know how many other people who avoided $100K in taxes, but then paid it back, did he refer for prosecution other than Hunter? Normally, if you give them their money, the IRS is not gonna waste anymore time on you. IMO, this is a disgruntled employee using this to get his 15 minutes of fame. Hunter cheated on his taxes, he got caught, he’s been penalized. We can argue whether the punishment was too light, but this nonsense from Shapley is just silly.

dogcows 1,030 Posted July 10, 2023 Remember those text messages they “released” during the hearings about Hunter? Those weren’t real. https://www.emptywheel.net/2023/07/10/gary-shapley-and-hunter-bidens-colleague-named-z/ Representative Jason Smith created those mock-ups. But you might think: it’s not totally dishonest because the text of the messages is real…. Right? Nope. The content was a “summary” of WhatsApp messages. Who made that summary? Well, the star witness, IRS “whistleblower” Gary Shapley doesn’t even know. To wrap up: Not real texts, but a mock-up of a “summary” by an unknown person.
