WhiteWonder 2,485 Posted October 4 I can't believe they are still doing best of 3 for the wildcard round. Imagine having a 162 game regular season only to have your playoffs be determined by a 2 of 3 series possibly with all 3 games on the road. These series should be 3 of 5 with home field advantage to the higher seed of course.

You can't do best-of-five for the first round as a potential seven days off for the first two seeds could really be a negative...

If they attempt this, the owners will probably want the players to take a pro-rated pay cut since they would only be playing the reduced number of games, not 162 for when they signed their contracts... The MLBPA will push back of course and then there would probably be a strike as the result...

I think that was also pretty silly but it was a precursor to what we have now. Once they decided to truly expand the playoffs, they needed to come up with a better format for this first round. If they don't want to reduce regular season games (or have some double headers) then they need to suck it up and deal with cold weather. Why should we worry about potential negatives for the top 2 seeds but not worry about the negatives for the 3 and 4 seeds possibly catching a hot team in a short ass series? It's not always about "sucking it up" and dealing with the colder weather. That cold weather includes snow and other things that cause cancelled games. With MLB now pretty much interleague, it is extremely difficult to reschedule a game say between the Yankees and Dodgers. Not to mention, with Posty mentioning the union, you can't just make players "suck it up" and play in brutally cold conditions that can lead to increased injuries and less days off(which are mandated by the players union by the way) The union will push back on that hard. I understand there is a players union and that the owners also want certain things. bottom line is a 162 game season should not have a best of 3 first round. It's bush league. Owners should be in favor of the expanded playoffs and more playoff games because it means more potential revenue for their teams if they make it. It also means more teams are alive later in the season which results in more ticket and merchandise sales, even for teams that don't get in.... So if the answer is shortening the season slightly, they should not be looking for players to take pro rated pay cuts, as posty speculated, because those players are able to draw more asses to seats later into the season as it is. We are talking 3 of 5 first round instead of 2/3. MLB made the decision to expand playoffs, it should be done right, imho. You're talking a max of 2 more games, 4 more days with travel before the LDS would begin. I don't personally think that's asking too much without shortening the season, but you could literally cut the season to 160 games.

Better record team gets all the home games. That's incentive for those that don't lead their division. Like you said, it aint perfect and I don't know what is, but I am cool with this so far. You should reward the best teams of the regular season, and that's essentially what they are doing. Top seed gets to rest (which can be a blessing or a curse) and doesn't have to use pitchers like all the other teams do. Then they reward the other two division champs AND top record that's not a division winner with home games, which probably gives a slight advantage and additional revenue to those teams. And the last two still have a decent chance of moving on. The thing that I'm not finding fun is not knowing when your team will play. Trying to make plans Wednesday when I have kids in school, while we likely won't know until the night before when the nl game 3's are decided are a major pain in the ass. And playing all the wild card games during the day, again with very little notice), makes it tough on employees and employers. I was out of town so it didn't impact me much (also have less people to report to and a more flexible schedule) but definitely sucks for hourly associates or those who are on a point system. I just think in general it is bogus to have such a long regular season grind conclude with such a short playoff series, where those home teams can catch a hot lower seed and have less of a chance to adjust. I suppose for the final 2 wildcard teams, it's all gravy. But for the 3 and 4 seeds, especially the 3 seed, a few years ago they would have had a legit playoff series with home and away games. Im cheering for the Mets (since Tampa didn't make it, of course), so I am not bitching about the format because my team lost or anything...
