Sean Mooney 1,815 Posted October 14 Trump was interviewed by Maria Bartiromo on his tariffs and economic plan. Bartiromo is not anti Trump in any way whatsoever. Maria: “News in your Detroit speech. I want to get your take on your economic policy. You said you want to eliminate taxes on tips. On overtime pay. Ending double taxation. Interest tax deductible. You even introduce a 15 percent tax rate to encourage companies to produce in America and hire American workers. But how will you pay for it? The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget says your plans will increase the debt by $7.5 trillion.” Trump: "But they don't know..." Maria: “The Wall Street Journal says your plans will increase the debt and deficit more than Kamala Harris’s,” Trump: "If I get elected, I will put a 200 percent tariff on every car and you will never sell them into the United States because if they ever build those plants Detroit is finished. South Carolina is finished. Everything is finished. They think they will go over there and build the biggest plants in the world in Mexico and sell them in, not going to happen. The autoworkers are way down in the last four or five months. They’re doing this ridiculous electric mandate. You sell gas-propelled cars, you sell hybrids, and you sell electric. Electric is great, it’s wonderful for some people, but not for everybody. As soon as I started talking about what I’m going to do, they stopped building all of the plants in Mexico. I said I would put tariffs. It is a beautiful word. It is a word that will make our country rich again. Without tariffs we have a busted country.” Maria: "What about the criticism, the Journal has done this as well, if you put 200 percent tariffs on a product that's only going to mean higher prices for consumers. It's got to be passed on somehow." Trump: “Put 200 or 500, I don’t care. I’ll put a number where they cannot sell one car. I do not want them to sell their car because I don’t want them hurting our car companies. We will have a lot of companies moving into the United States. When I use 200, I don’t want their cars. They will not be able to sell cars. We will not let them sell cars from a nice new factory owned by China, located in Mexico." Maria: “So your think is the threat of a 200 percent tariff will stop them from taking the car. So you won’t actually have to do it, so you’re not actually going to push prices higher – that is your thinking?” Trump: “Now I’m saying 200; I am using it as a figure of speech,” Maria: " But you say 200 a lot" Trump: “I will say 100, 200, I’ll say 500. I do not care. They will not bring cars into this country from Mexico and destroy what car companies we have left. But much more than that, I will protect the company when it comes to the United States. We have a lot of companies that will come in. Remember, we have the real market. If we keep running like we are for the last three or four years, we will lose all of that. Relying on the dollar. If they do not rely on the dollar, then I will not let them sell to the United States. If you do not rely on us as a currency of choice, then you will not be able to do business with the United States and you know what they will say, ‘I love the dollar very much.’ Every single one of them. Because we are losing that, you know China is trying to take that away from us. By the way, I will say the same thing. 27.5 percent tariff on cars from China. They have not been able to pillage our country and close up our factories; otherwise, they would be selling cars here like hotcakes. If you take a look at what they are doing to Europe, China is destroying the automobile business in Europe.” Maria: "I'm wondering how you will pay for this no tax on stuff, and you said that there's a lot of fat in government." Trump: “I gave you an answer: Growth. We will grow at a level you have never seen before. We will have tremendous jobs and we will have companies coming in left and right and they will build factories. They will take over empty from all over the place that companies left.”
Sean Mooney 1,815 Posted October 14 13 minutes ago, TimHauck said: What did he say? Basically Trump has no blame for inflation it was natural stuff any President would deal with....everything is on Biden. I said that yes Biden takes some blame for inflation stuff. I then asked him what blame he would assign to Trump and he word saladed answers for a long time calling it "whataboutism" and all that. To completely absolve Trump of all blame ignores all the studies done in 2018 and 2019 that were highlighting that the tariffs were going to push GDP down and reduce real income in the US and that the tariffs cost jobs in some sectors. Then COVID happened, we dumped excess money into the system (both Trump and Biden), then Biden kept on the tariffs- and we ended up in a mess.

Sean Mooney 1,815 Posted October 14 The chain also pointed out that cigarettes purchases, which was once the largest sales category for convenience stores, has fallen 26% since 2019. A marked shift in sales to other nicotine products, like Zyn, hasn’t made up the difference. Gee- who'd have thought betting on tobacco products to bring back your company wasn't the most solid plan. Also, pretty sure no 7-11 has been updated in like 30 years. Lastly, 7-11 is being swallowed up by places like Wawa, Sheetz, Buc-ees, Royal Farms, etc....places that are actually modern, and you can buy food that is made to order and not thrown under a heat lamp for a few hours.

Perhaps you can elaborate further so that I might understand. It's just the latest example. Avoiding paying OT pay to your workers isn't pro-worker. He's not pro-worker. He has previously said striking workers should be fired and replaced. His pro corporation, less regulation, anti worker. He said he prefers Right to Work. It's all documented. https://www.epi.org/blog/president-trump-has-attacked-workers-safety-wages-and-rights-since-day-one/ https://cwa-union.org/trumps-anti-worker-record https://newark.nj.aft.org/janus/trump-administration-opposes-unions-key-supreme-court-case https://www.liunachicago.org/about-us/news/details/2147/anti-union-actions-by-the-trump-administration He uses populism to appeal to the working class. He famously told Anthony Scaramucci in 2015 how he was going to tell the frustrated union workers and blue collar workers that he understands them so he could get their vote. It worked. And now despite having a terrible pro union pro worker record, many of them still support him.

I get that workers like overtime as the pay is typically time and a half or even double time. The thing is paying overtime as opposed to regular time increases costs. It is often cost effective to hire additional workers as opposed to paying overtime. Also, overtime being available may actually increase the motivation to not finish a task on regular time. it may incentivize delay so that overtime can be earned. Overtime may also result in increased injuries on the job. Frankly long hours are precisely why OSHA and the FAA have time limits for pilots, truckers, and ship pilots. I have no doubt you are correct as to Trump generally as I have read multiple more or less undisputed accounts of him looking for every advantage, fair and unfair (at least in my mind) to avoid paying bills. I just fail to see your original argument as to Union workers. No worries. I often fail to see matters clearly.
