Darren Waller would rather be unemployed than play with Daniel Jones again

Recommended Posts

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Tight end Darren Walleris calling it a career.

The New York Giants were informed Sunday that Waller, 31, is retiring.

"We have great respect for Darren as a person and player. We wish him nothing but the best," the team said in a statement Sunday.

Waller had stayed away from the team this offseason as he contemplated his future, bypassing a potential $200,000 workout bonus and now a base salary of $10.525 million for this upcoming season.

The Giants get $11.9 million in cap savings this year with Waller as a post-June 1 cut.

New York was expecting an answer by their mandatory minicamp, which is taking place Tuesday and Wednesday. They now move forward with Daniel BellingerLawrence Cager and fourth-round pick Theo Johnson at the top of their depth chart at the tight end position.

Theo Johnsons physical stats compare nicely to Sam Laporta's. This is the best situation he could have fell into. He is 6 ft 6 250 and ran a 4.57 40. Laporta is 6ft3  245 and ran a 4.59. Not to say that is blazingly fast but it is pretty good for a TE. He also compares well to Brock Bowers who was the first TE drafted this year and is 6ft3 with a 4.53 40. There are around  100 plus targets available if he can stand out.

What a disingenuous thread title. But you knew that when you chose to phrase it that way....

Let’s just pray that is ADP stays in the double digit rounds

well, that time is good enough that if he can run a good route and catch balls, he would be fast enough that teams may have to have a safety cover him as some LB's might not be able to.   in the end, that is key because it will open things up elsewhere in the offense.

He's retiring because he's a cripple. Has nothing to do with Daniel Jones.

he has had problems with injuries.   and New York actually used him to block more than I anticipated.

TE's generally dont have long careers that go much beyond the age of 31.    their body takes the pounding of an O lineman and then they take some hits when they go out for passes.

personally I wouldnt have used him as much in a blocking role in an attempt to preserve his health and I think that was a mistake on  the part of the Giants coaching staff.   but either way, its not abnormal for TE's to retire at this age.

Well plus he’s had mental health and addiction issues in his life. Possible that played some role too, as far as not wanting to risk a relapse or something like that

certainly possible.

but at the same time I have no info that would confirm or refute this.    either way, its not really relevant to the discussion.   the important thing is we dont draft him this year for fantasy football.    thats the takeaway.

Plus. He's a good blocker. He'll always be on the field. I really think it was Penn States offense being the reason more people don't know who he is.

And more people don’t need to know at this time. I want to introduce him in September to my league mates.  Double digit round Te

I really wanted the lions to draft him and use a twin TE set like the pats did

Not sure why I opened a thread about the Giants on a fantasy website considering they’re a DND at every position, but I actually came away with something informative!  It’s interesting to learn that anyone would ever use WNBA and got in the same sentence.  By the way, whatever happened to that dude that got arrested in Russia for drugs?  That was hilarious that the Russians thought they had someone valuable!!!!!

As a Giants fan, I was pleased with the Theo Johnson selection. I am hopeful he can develop into a productive TE one day. But I wouldn't touch him in a fantasy re-draft league, not even in a 14 teamer. He's not even the TE1, that will be Daniel Bellinger, who I wouldn't want either. Regardless, whichever TE is on the field will be the 4th or 5th option on any given play. Has there ever been a day 3 or undrafted TE to be fantasy relevant their rookie seasons? Two of the best, Gates and Kittle weren't. In Dynasty a worthy investment. In Re-draft, let the fools who play 14 team non ppr leagues waste a pick on him...

I was about to say that its rare that any TE is productive in their rookie year.   it happens.   but the number of cases in the history of the NFL where it did I can probably count on one hand.

to that end, I agree.  hes a nice late round rookie (or free agent) buy in dynasty.   but I'd be surprised if he was highly productive this year.    Granted now that I said that his chances of blowing up statistically are probably a lot better.   but seriously, you dont need to draft him in redraft leagues.  you can put him on your watch list and if he lights it up week 1 you can pick him up on waivers for free.    TE is a position people dont generally pay much attention to.   so unless hes projected to be one of the top 5 or 6 TE's nobody will be paying attention.

Bellinger is also 3 inches shorter and ran a 4.63 to Theos 4.57. I understand most rookie TEs do not produce but most of them are not given the chance to compete right off the bat and I can assure you Jones both needs a TE that can block and one that can catch. He had one game last year I was legit concerned he was going to die on the field after like 10 sacks

yeah, and hes a mobile QB too.  imagine if they had a less mobile guy in there.

too bad too.   this might actually be a case where a QB prospect was ruined by continuously putting him behind a leaky line.   but it looks like they are making a significant attempt to fix the line this year so it will be interesting if Jones production improves as a result.

Come September if the guy is producing, he’s going to be a double digit round winner,

agreed.  nobody is picking him.   does he actually have an ADP?

might actually be a waiver wire darling if he ends up producing.    That said, with the new WR they have in I can see a bounceback of sorts.   Will it be enough to make him anything other than a quality backup?   I cannot say but if hes gonna turn it around it needs to happen this year.  I dont think he will get another shot to turn his career around.

He looked so lost last year. Not just lost but scared. Nothing like the QB from the year before.

Ben Sinnott. He's this years LaPorta with insane upside. He's going to outscore Bowers and it won't even be close.

Put it on stone.

the year before the line was functioning a bit better I think.    if my memory isnt out to lunch I seem to think they had some key injuries to that O line which led to some really poor performances

I would stay away from all Giants, not named Cutlets, this year. It's going to be a long road.

It was widely reported that Waller was contemplating retirement so not a huge shock.

From a fantasy standpoint - no impact. Waller probably wouldn't have been drafted. An 8-year career.... only one of which ever amounted to anything ('20).

Brian Daboll told reporters that “something happened a few weeks ago” to Bellinger and his participation in spring and summer practices has since been limited. It’s unclear if Bellinger sustained a serious injury, but it will be something to monitor in the coming weeks. Bellinger, who had 30 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns over 11 games in 2022, profiles as the Giants’ clear No. 1 tight end after the retirement of Darren Waller. Rookie TE Theo Johnson would be next up if Bellinger misses time during the preseason or regular season
