Trump to eliminate taxes on tips

For that reason, I think this idea sounds great in theory but is unworkable in practice as it would involve an overhaul of compensation in the hospitality industry.

Plus, these days so many places have tipping options at the register.

Well, I don't know that it's unworkable.  I was in Australia for work and tipping isn't something they do over there.  The cab driver looked at me like I was nuts when I tipped him, and the waitress as well.  So it's doable.  But it's so ingrained in to our culture that I don't see something like that changing overnight with the signing of a piece of legislation.  And that would be chaotic, which may be what you're getting at.

Of course.  What percentage of people do you think carry cash?  Let alone tip in cash?

They collect it by servers declaring it.  They declare it because there's a paper trail.

Why is this confusing to you?

Even cash only places? 🤡

Your false equivalency is stupid.  Every tax other than a pure flat tax targets one group over another.  From that you conclude we should forgive student loans.  Jeebus.

I guess you're not as smart as you think you are, despite the 500 patents you needed to tell us about...

I simply compared pandering to a very specific group that would leave a financial shortfall to the US treasury and said shortfall would ultimately have to be funded by all of us.

You're dismissed.

One thing maybe some of you don’t know. They raised minimum wage for servers here in taxachusetts. It is like 6 now instead of the 2.25 it was for 20 years

I don’t see why that matters, if someone is giving a tip, because their service was appreciated, that’s a gift, not income.  I don’t see why it’s a big deal.

here's a thought

if you think tips should be taxed, don't tip me, instead just send more of your money to the govt directly and cut out the middle man

this country has an over taxation problem, money gets taxed so many focking times before it gets to your pocket

Liberals don't get it cause they can't stop themselves from partisan spending. They are like a bunch of dumb women maxing out the credit cards on useless shlt.

Every tax policy should be assessed based on it's merits.  To say "well, you support A, so you must support B", is beyond intelligent conversation.

That is for all “in store” payments.  If we’re talking sit-down restaurants (which I’d bet account for the majority of total tips earned nationally), I think BeachGuy’s estimate of ~80% using credit cards is probably accurate.  Yea, there are plenty of cash only places, but as you mention they’re mostly pizza and sandwich shops where the employees are likely not making much of their income in tips.

You think people tip on credit cards at bars and fast food type places?

Lets pretend it is 80%. What is the IRS and your master doing now to collect it? 🦗

Bars yes, although maybe more like 50-60% IMO.   Who tips at fast food places?

But this may be a good idea.  If I pay in cash at Jersey Mike’s will it still ask me on the touchscreen if I want to tip them 20%?

Moron doesn't understand how to read charts.  That 67% is for the % of people that HAVE used that option dummy.  If you really think that a bigly % of folks are paying for restaurants, pizza places, convenience stores, food trucks, and everything else with cash you have your stupid head shoved up your stupid as$.

And just as I said, the bigly majority pay at restaurants with a card, not cash.

https://www.pymnts.com/credit-cards/2023/credit-card-users-are-the-biggest-spenders-at-restaurants/

https://www.touchbistro.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-payment-processing-for-restaurants/#:~:text=86% of Canadians and 77,when dining in at restaurants.

"In 2024, our approach to spending money reflects a significant shift towards a cashless society."

"A significant 70% of individuals report card payments as their most frequent choice"

Lawn service, maid service, strip clubs, bars, parking valets, concierges, shuttle bus drivers, sky caps, bell men, hostess', hotel desk attendants, door men, hotel maids, carwash attendants, barbers, nail salons, masseuse, cart girl, club house attendant, caddies, fishing guides and hunting guides are the ones that immediately come to mind but I don't get out much.

Why are most folks on this board so dumb?

Haha good catch.  It also splits credit card up by chip (35), swipe (26), & contactless (17) for a total of 78% and that’s not including Apple Pay.

A bigger takeaway is probably that 33% of people apparently haven’t used cash at all in 30 days.

Holy phok you people are desperate.  The VAST majority of spending, as I have proven with links, is by credit card.

Yep.  Cash is not used very bigly these days.

I'll bet that banks carry far less cash in their branches and in their ATMS s since barely anyone uses cash.  In fact:

“We’ve really seen an aggressive decline in the use cases for cash,” Sands said. He said he expects that slide to continue, projecting cash and checks will be used for just 10% of transactions by 2027.

Negative boyo, not taxing declared tips would have a huge impact on IRS revenue.  And why should these folks, whose tips are part of their wages, be excluded from being taxed?

Why do I have to be taxed?
