Caleb Williams is the real deal.

Agree, but even in that little meaningless sample size, you can see exactly how special he is. His game translates to the pro game, he’s going to be a threat.
Hence the #1 overall draft capital

Oh for sure in thr fantasy world and pure stats he should be ok.  He has great weapons.  They will have to address OL next year.  Hes set up.  He went 4 of 7.  He showed some abilities we already knew of as the #1 pick and what people call one of the best prospects in a while.  We knew this already.  He went 4 of 7 and got 2 fgs.  Cant take much from that otherwise.

I guess im saying is idk why people are like oh caleb is real deal?  Hes one of best prospects in a while.  What because they won 33 to 6 in thr preseason?  He accounted for 2 fg drives.

How low was the bar to make people go wow oh !?

Well, I've been following the guy in practices and he's been pretty damn impressive there too.

I didn't see even one person mention the score saying that's why he is looking good. :dunno:

And this is the time of year to put out your takes on rookie players. We are all going to draft in our leagues before any of these guys play in a real game.

I thought this was the fun of being in fantasy chat rooms and talking about different guys.

I think this is the mix up. I don't think ANYONE is thinking that Willians looks the part of a quality, highly skilled QB prospect because the Bears won a preseason game. I think it is the total package why people think so highly of him.

You know who also had a really good game? Velus Jones and Ian Wheeler. They combined for 11 carries for 77 yards and 3 touchdowns. No one is talking about these guys being on a trajectory to become great because of it.

Oh, and Brett Rypien threw 3 TDs in the opening preseason game. :dunno:

Caleb Williams looks the part of a highly skilled QB prospect because he's exactly that.

Watch Mahomes College tape and watch Caleb Williams college tape. Other than the uniform, you can't tell the difference. They look erie similar.

I am not sold on him being the real deal. However he has been put in the best position of any rookie QB likely ever. Most teams drafting a QB have a cupboard that is bare. No skill players and an all around bad team.  Williams is coming to a team that restocked in the offseason and has legit skill players at the important positions.

Just curious, what about his game don't you like?

The Bears did a very good job of giving him a lot of help,  very good move.

I am never sold n a rookie qb. No matter who it is.  It is just really hard to perform at the NFL level.

Caleb Williams makes Stroud look like Sam Darnold in terms of talent, and he's in a much better situation. Stroud did pretty well.

I'd be doing backflips if Caleb Williams was my QB2, with high QB1 upside

This is why I am staying away from him. Stroud had a historic rookie year. Asking another rookie to come in and be that or better is a setup for failure

The only knock on Caleb is he doesn't know how to win with a good team around him. The good news is, he doesn't have to worry about that in Chicago.

And in his whole time at USC, they never had 1 offensive lineman get drafted. The o-line was awful

Some would say their defense sucked, but you could be right about that as well.

At least he will be used to a horrible offensive line.

This is going to be fun watching all the Bears haters bow out of this thread as the year goes on because of their bad takes.so far.

I get it. Every year people think the team on Hard Knocks is going to win the Super Bowl.

I've never seen it before. It's kind if overrated I think. And who thinks that and why?

I think the bears will be better than we have seen in a long time.

not sure they make the playoffs though.  My bet is that they are 9-8 or 8-9 or if everything goes right they are in a playoff race in the last weeks of the season and finish 10-7

I can see that. Currently their under/over is at 8.5. New offense, new QB. Who knows? That is a good u/o for Vegas to be confident of getting people on both sides since the Bears did win 7 games last year, but the whole of the team is rather new.

That's probably about right. 8 or 9 is what I'm thinking. And that's fine with a new QB/Team. It'll only get better for Williams.

The thing Bears fans need to worry about with Williams is turnovers. He turned the ball over a ton in College and was awful against the blitz.

Concerning stat about Caleb Williams from the Athletic

Mark in ATL : 11/16/2023 2:22 pm
after last weekend’s game. Sorry if this has been brought up before. “Williams has to address his awful ball security. He fumbled again Saturday to raise his career tally to 32 in as many starts. USC’s offense has had no schematic answers for blitzes this year, but Williams’ tendency to wildly run around the pocket turns his greatest asset — improvisation — into a liability.”

Yeah, he was terrible on the blitz in college for sure. The Bears have been throwing blitzes at him like 60+% of the time in practices from their first team defense I think because of that.

In today's game, his numbers didn't look good but that was not a reflection of how he played. I think they were experimenting with certain play calls early and the receivers were flat out full on covered on every play. Williams made zero errant throws. A couple throw aways when the receivers were blanketed. Nothing close to getting picked. Then he threw a bomb right on cue to an open Tyler Scott and would have gone for like a 50 yard TD but the D-back pulled Scott's shoulder pad back for the interference penalty. Then he hit Odunze on a sick throw down field. Then he scrambled and hit Odunze in the endzone on the numbers but Odunze forgot to keep his feet in bounds.  Then Williams just ran it in for the TD. Took 1 sack with no fumbles. Only one really bad pass where he didn't set his feet as he was running out of the pocket and sailed the ball out of reach.

Pretty good game for preseason. Keep it simple.

He struggled a bit more today and was outplayed by both Tyson Bagent and Brett Rypien, but it's not like he was terrible or anything. He had a TD run.

The main thing is he learns every time he's on the field

Bagant is coming along as well as backup. He's proving to have a pretty live arm with accuracy.

Bears schedule is set up fot success.   Pretty easy schedule first half.  Do not play a division game until week 11.

Are the Bear's actually pretty good this year?  The whole team has looked impressive and deep.

apparently the bears schedule is easy the 1st half of the season then gets more difficult afterwards.  seems like CW could be a very nice sell high candidate mid season for the savvy ff'er.

I don't think they have a divisional game until they play the Packers in November.

Huge Bears fan and I'm still not sold on Caleb.  Preseason is a fun preview, but it is a bad predictor of real NFL success.  I've been pleasantly surprised with Caleb's accuracy and his feet.  He looks to me like he holds the ball at least a second too long on plays, looking for homeruns.  For him to be above average this season, his offensive line (which has been a longstanding problem for the Bears) will need to be above average.

They have done a really good job of giving mr Williams all the tools to help him mature as a Qb.

the receivers were fully blanketed?     I figured their WR were far too good for this to happen.   unless we are talking mostly backups playing in this.

It is very common for rookies to have this issue.  partly because the speed at the NFL level is higher.   but also partly because the coverage is better too.   open by NFL standards is considerably tighter coverage than when a WR is  open by college standards.

Wait until the speed of game picks up in the regular season, team usually go very vanilla on Def during most preseason games, he hasn’t seen anything yet.

for sure.  but they have probably shown him the real deal in closed practices with the defense going full out.

maybe even a couple open ones.

but we likely wont really have a true idea of how good the kid is until week 1 or week 2 are fully in the books.    This is why I dont like drafting rookies.   it can be a total crapshoot.
