cmh6476 918 Posted September 6 part of Christianity and the teachings of the Bible is to spread the word. So the book you are telling people not to push is intended to be shared through the words in the book. Not that it's what I do, but those who do are led to believe it's what is right. WhiteWonder 2,476 Posted September 6 there is a difference between sharing / spreading the word and pushing your beliefs onto others. I respect people who make an effort to know if you are open to or interested in hearing something about their particular faith, and want to talk WITH you, rather than talk AT you. It especially rubs me the wrong way when people act as if their religion is the one true religion, nothing else could be correct, and you are wrong for not sharing their beliefs. there are so many religions in the world, it makes it kind of comical to act as if yours is the only way. Especially when you consider that a majority of people grow up with the faith they simply learned as a child without ever actually comparing religions and choosing for themselves.

BudBro 168 Posted September 6 1 hour ago, Engorgeous George said: You would think that God could find better representatives. In the last half of Acts 5, the apostles are rounded up and arrested for preaching about Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem. One of the religious leaders suggested the council leave the apostles be and that the movement would die out if it wasn't real. They agreed, and let them go with a beating and an admonition. One of the greatest lines ever written says... Act 5:41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame (disgrace) for his name (Jesus). WhiteWonder 2,476 Posted September 6 1 hour ago, BudBro said: One can be logically led to the water. Only faith will allow one to drink. ah, one of those "mine is the only way" people. Because naturally you can lead me to water (your religion) by using nothing but pure logic and fact... but then I just need the faith to drink (believe). Question. Since only Christianity presents witnesses who testify of the One God making Himself human and entering creation, what proof is there of the accuracy of the account... without citing the bible? I believe there are some mentions in non biblical texts but nothing that would come close to being definitive proof. Not that one needs definitive proof to have faith, but you're stating it as such.... which further speaks to my point.

Not that one needs definitive proof to have faith, but you're stating it as such.... which further speaks to my point. I can't follow the reasoning of the last sentence you wrote. I didn't state "one needs definitive proof." I offered the testimony of witnesses as proof. That's how most juries decide cases. You asked for something outside of eyewitness testimony. There are 20k+ manuscripts (in various languages) that have been found, some from only 100 years after the originals. The text of the witnesses is virtually the same today as it was before the year 200. The same scribal accuracy is found with the writings of Homer and Hippocrates. A Roman historian named Gaius Suetonius Tranquillas, who was the chief secretary of Emperor Hadrian and who had access to the imperial records, mentions Jesus in a section he wrote concerning the reign of Emperor Claudius. He refers to Christ using the variant spelling of "Chrestus." "Because the Jews at Rome caused continuous disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus, he (Claudius) expelled them from the city" (ibid., chapter entitled "Ancient Historians"). "Cornelius Tacitus (AD 55-120) is often called the “greatest historian” of ancient Rome (he called Christianity "the destructive superstition"). He authored two large works — the Annals and the Histories. Much of what he wrote is now lost to us. Fortunately, there’s one remaining portion which is of interest to this discussion. The portion describes Nero blaming the Christians for the great fire of Rome (AD 64). It reports: Therefore, to stop the rumor, Nero substituted as culprits and punished in the utmost refinements of cruelty, a class of men, loathed for their vices, whom the crowd styled Christians. Christus, the founder of the name, had undergone the death penalty in the reign of Tiberius, by sentence of the procurator Pontius Pilatus, and the pernicious superstition was checked for a moment, only to break out once more, not merely in Judea, the home of the disease, but in the capital itself, where all things horrible or shameful in the world collect and find a vogue.1" link (All of this corroborates to what the witnesses of the Bible testified.) First century Jewish historian, Josephus, (one of 10 governors in Jerusalem elected to oversee the war against Rome in late 60s AD) mentions Jesus twice in his writings. link The Pilate Stone was found in 1961, a limestone block with an inscription referencing "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea." Pilate, of course, is named in the Bible as the one who sentenced Jesus to crucifixion for rebellion against the state. Lots of emperical truth out there, to include excavations. Shroud of Turin was just dated to the time of Jesus.
WhiteWonder 2,476 Posted September 6 Correct, you offered the testimony of witnesses as proof and I asked how anyone can validate these testimonies? What is to keep someone from BSing such a testimony … and since it strengthens the case for Christianity, it must be accurate you then go on to quote a bunch of stuff about historians and Jesus I don’t think anyone disputes Jesus was a person but again, I didn’t enter this thread to argue specific religions. Im lamenting the overall concept that people often tend to push their specific religion onto others and act as if there is no other alternative. Youre helping prove that point

No Buddhism doesn't have or worship any gods. From Google search (courtesy of their AI, which isn't a god either) Buddhism does not worship many gods; it is considered a non-theistic religion, meaning it does not believe in a creator deity or gods to worship, although some forms of Buddhism may include figures like bodhisattvas that are revered as spiritual guides on the path to enlightenment, but not worshipped as gods in the traditional sense.
