Hey, has anyone ever used a VPN to watch out of market NFL streaming games? Does it work? If so, any recommendations or tips?

We use Express VPN in Japan.  We were getting blocked from our Hulu, Netflix etc, as being out of the country, or getting the Japanese version of our streaming services.  So we use it, it works fine.

But it's pretty easy to use.  We can set it for whatever city in the US we want.  Haven't used it for regular TV.... dunno.

I can solve this for you.  When you ask about a VPN do you mean?

a) to hide the fact that you're watching an illegal stream of the game (FREE)

b) to sign up with NFL.com too get the NFL Ticket at the foreign discounted price (Much cheaper than NFL Ticket from YouTube or anywhere else but sill ~$150 or so)

The VPN I use is Private Internet Access (PIA).  The VPN part is easy, download the app and push of a button.

Rereading your post I think maybe you're asking about a third option: to spoof your cable company to the west coast to watch a game that isn't the game being shown on FOX (for example) in your area say on the east coast?

I don't think that works, I think the cable company app requires to geolocate you in other ways than just your IP address.  Just like the betting apps like Fan Duel do.  But I could be wrong because I haven't had cable tv in decades.  

It's been years since I tried B above too, but NFL. com didn't used to do any check other than you IP address.

To do A above I can PM you some links for free streams, if you are familiar on how to get reddit streams to work, that you can watch for free.  It's up to you whether you use a VPN or not.

Hulu uses geo location. If you go to Hulu through a Brave browser incognito and it can't find you, it prompts you to put your televisions device code in. And then it uses that location.

Yes, ideally I’d like to do the 3rd option. I was hoping a VPN and either a subscription to YouTube tv or Hulu Live could trick them into thinking I was in market for Steeler games. That way I’d still have the ability to DVR them. We like to do things on Sunday, but usually get to the game the same day. I would have been willing to just use apps and suffer through watching them live, but I guess they lock you into your billing zip code, so fock them. NFL+ doesn’t allow for casting, and I’m not crazy about illegal streams-we have a 77 oled and picture quality is a must.

I can’t believe the NFL doesn’t allow for a single team solution. I would happily pay for it. 

Life was so much easier when Sunday Ticket was still with Directv. They always found a way to give it us free every year.

I have used one to get a different 4 pm Sunday game on Paramount and worked all last season, Express vpn.

I would suggest option B.  The gamepass you get from NFL.com when not in North America (because of VPN) is completely different than what you get here. (or at least it used to be.  I haven't tried any of this for years)  You'd get instant replay so you don't even have to DVR it.  I think even without commercials.

It was ~$125 5 or 6 years ago.  Can't imagine it would be any more than what you were going to pay for YouTube or Hulu now days.

NFL+ will not let you cast, but with Gamepass, it looks like I found a workaround:

Another stupid question: Do I need a VPN at router level or just an app? Will it need to be on while watching or just for sign up? And do I need a special VPN to change countries or will any of them work?

Horseman is correct.  The answer is a stream.  That's what I do for any sporting event I want to see that  can't for various reasons.  If you are willing to go that route PM him or myself.  Probably not something we should post in a thread.

Most Steeler Games are on CBS Paramount, Get a free trial of Paramount and free trial of Express VPN, get the Express app on a firestick though cause it don't work on ROKU. Fock around putting the vpn on different parts of the US and see what happens.

Thanks everyone! I think I’ve got it sorted. Would preferably not like to have to watch live, so streams are out. NFL+ Premium seems to allow for replays through an AppleTv or my native Sony tv streaming apps, so I think I’m gonna go that route.
