I feel like Trevor Lawrence is getting too much of a pass

Recommended Posts

He isn't very good, but the consensus seems to be *shrug*

He was a number 1 overall pick billed as the best prospect since Andrew Luck, and he's probably the 20th best starter in the NFL.

I get that he had Urban Meyer, but this is his third season removed from that.  It's time to be good at football if you're going to be good at football.

Caleb Williams is getting raked 2 games in.  Bryce Young is getting raked.  Sam Bradford, Baker Mayfield, Stafford, Goff, Jemarcus Russell .. all got criticized for not living up to the hype at some point.  Usually when guys don't live up to the hype, there's some criticism and hand wringing.

Why does Lawrence get a free pass.  Did people just forget about him since he's in Jacksonville?

Because he’s been good enough. He’s nowhere near Young or Williams, but he does disappoint at crucial times & he never really has an explosive dominant game. Fans do get tired of mediocrity though.

You said the reason in the second line.  I told people in my family/friends league last year before our draft that Lawrence was a bust, that he sucked.  They all gave me the excuse of Urban Meyer.  I said, well then you guys should be lining up to take him early (it's a 2 QB league).  Last year, 8 QB's were kept, Lawrence was the 7th QB drafted.  This year, I asked if anyone realized I was right, they all said no and that he played well last year.  LOL, imagine that.  I actually drafted Lawrence as my 3rd QB, he was the 24th QB off the board (including keepers)!  When I asked again, they all said I got a steal.  Here's the funny thing.  The day after the draft, I tried to trade him because I messed up not realizing he and Burrow (my QB2), had the same bye week.  I couldn't trade him for Brock Purdy, Aaron Rodgers, Geno Smith, Matt Stafford, OR, Justin Herbert.  I ended up getting Mayfield.  How funny is that?  They still won't admit I was right about him.

When people make claims of how great someone will be and are wrong, they won't admit it unless they're on an island.  The vast majority of people were on the Lawrence bandwagon so they figure if they all just slowly walk away, no one will realize it.  At best, he's around league average, but no one will cop to it.  They just have excuses.

His 51% competition rate is better than Richardson 49%, what do you expect from him, seven super bowl wins.

He’s kinda been like younger Andy Dalton when he played with AJ Green.  Not bad enough to get benched, but not good enough to make the Jags a contender.

But for someone who was supposed to be a star by now, yes, he’s been a disappointment.

Lawrence hasn’t lived up to expectations but he doesn’t focking suck either. Hence, the meh :dunno:

I still think there's quite a bit of expectations that he still is gonna pan out, just a bit of a late bloomer.

He's not been the phenom that he was hyped as, but he's not been terrible either. He's thrown for over 4000 yard 2 out of 3 seasons. He won a division title too.

Jury is still out

Should I start Bo Nix or Trevor Lawrence for Week 3? I am thinking it might be more exciting to watch Lawrence because it is a prime time game. But, I have a feeling Nix might do well.

Nix needs to be Nixed.

Just hand your money over now if you're starting Nix in any format.

It also doesn’t help that he’s now got 2 new WRs on the outside with Davis & Thomas (a rookie). Takes time to gain confidence in players new to the system. I’m puzzled by the lack of targets for Kirk, who was a solid fantasy WR2/3 the last couple years. Lawrence probably won’t ever live up to hype, but he’s young & hasn’t taken a beating like some other QBs either

Meh to this topic.  Not sure why this keeps coming up. Last year Trevor had the Jags in contention for a first round bye when he got hurt and the wheels came off.  The year before he brought the Jags back from 27-0 with less than a minute to go in the 2nd qtr against the Chargers for the 3rd biggest comeback in NFL playoff history.  And he’s done it with who???   Engram was considered a major bust before landing in Jax.  Ridley was out of football for a year before landing in Jax.  Kirk is a good #2 WR.  Zay Jones…see Engram.  Now Trevor has a raw, true talent at WR.  Dude has done more with less than any active QB in the NFL right now.

The only reason anyone would think Trevor has less to do more with is because he makes them seem like less.

I think its a case where nobody around here paid a high pick for Lawrence.    hes a guy that the original guy who drafted him pulled the chute and whoever is buying him now knows they are getting a low end QB1 or a high end QB2.

hes a significant player in my superflex league but any league that starts 1 QB, hes either your backup or a 1a or 1B if you are going with dualing QB's

Going into this season , he’s completed 65% of his passes, threw for over 4000 yards, and threw 20 plus tds, I think that’s why he gets a pass, he’s simply been a good Qb, not great, was supposed to be great, I don’t think he’s lived up the hype when he came into the nfl, in which I thought was over blown.

100% true.

but hes also not 100% to blame for the situation either.

they threw an absolutely stupid amount of money at Kirk and brought him over to be their #1 WR.   everyone on this board knew he wasnt a #1 WR.   Hes still not.

I do think there is more upside here, but only if he has good personell around him.    Kirk isnt a #1.  hes a #2 on most normal teams.

I lay this at the feet of management.

and I think a lot of other people do too.    This may also be why hes gotten a bit of a pass.

Meyers was a big mistake, they haven’t surrounded him with a stud wr, Kirk doesn’t come close, Ridley missed a whole season, last season he was just trying to get his football legs under him, but yet Lawrence has performed well imo.

Go look at Engram and Zay Jones stats before coming to Jacksonville, get a tiny bit of education, then come back and try again.  Engram was drafted 23rd overall, and Jones 37th.

When Tebow was in Denver and had Demaryious Thomas and Eric Decker, the Tebow fans said he didn't have receivers.

Then, of course, Manning shows up and throws 55 TDs.

yeah, a lot of us knew the WR could play though.

nobody was trying to unload Manning when he was suddenly dropped in there at QB.   There was no question at the time whether Manning would perform.     and those WR were highly sought after once it was announced manning would be there.

usually those in the know have an idea of who can play and who cant.     Thomas and Decker were beating coverage fairly consistently with Teebow at QB.    but the throw would miss them by a mile.   Thats perhaps a very extreme comparison.   not entirely fair.

Lawrence isnt entirely without weapons.   he just doesnt have a true #1 WR. say what you will about kirk, but he is at least a viable WR.  he is just not a #1 WR.  Engram is good but hes no Kelce.  he cant take an offense on his back and step it up a level like he did in his prime.  A true #1 WR would turn a 4000 yard QB like him into a 4500 yard QB.  if he gets one, he may yet turn into a top QB.    so I'm waiting and watching.   Not drafting him at this point unless the value is there.   Almost got him as my #2 QB in my superflex league this year but ended up going a different direction as I was outbid at the auction.

It is a 2 QB start league. So, it isn't entirely stupid to have Nix as a 3rd or 4th QB; that can start if your starter hasn't been doing that great like Lawrence.

Nix got a rushing TD for Broncos for Week 3, I think. Not a bad start..

He is Daniel Jones but because he lives in Jacksonville no one cares

So far he’s been the absolute worst type of QB you want - a guy not bad enough to get benched, but not good enough to take you to the SB.

Can say that about most of the qbs starting in the nfl today.

Lmao more with less.  A 1st round RB and Clemson buddy in Etienne.  A former 2nd round WR in Kirk.  Engram a 1st round TE.  And now a 1st round WR.  Ridley is a qst round WR.

What on earth are you babbling about?  With the least?  What?

Lawrence is mid.

I'd say he's mid-minus.

He misses receivers a lot, and he's careless with the football.

He's kind of like Lamar Jackson with about 30% of the running ability and is sloppier protecting the ball.

The funny thing is he's got pretty decent legs.  He's basically Daniel Jones.  They should run him a little more.

I sometimes lurk in team forums during games to see what fans are saying while their team is getting destroyed....   Jags fans are full of bitterness right now. Hate the GM, hate the coach, and quite pissed about being stuck with over-paid Lawrence.

Their misery is my happiness...  and yes, I'm that shallow.  go dolphins :(
