I went outside to check just now because the winds are howling enough to make noise. Pretty strong wind and the clouds in our partly cloudy sky are moving rather rapidly to the south, maybe SSE. But still no rain. The winds, while strong, would not seem out of the ordinary were I not looking at weather reports of that hurricane.

We're getting the bare-ass minimum of this as possible. This small blip is still more than what we got of Beryl and Francine.

My luck won't last forever but it's lasted a third time.

I own a house (property taxes are very high in my state), not that it matters; I'm not in Florida. Just giving reasons people live in Florida. My dad's friend moved their after he retired for the weather, access to the ocean, and no taxes on his retirement income.

Heard the wind howling outside again just now but not rain. Went out there hoping there would be a little mist/drizzle in the air to accompany it and get me a little damp, just the slightest wet kiss from Helene, but no. Pensacola is experiencing a really a gorgeous evening while people not very far to the east are really getting hammered.

Tornadoes are the same way, only on a smaller scale. An F-3 went through a town about 10 miles north of me in March 1998. A guy who lived in a subdivision had the best footage of the tornado approaching. Filmed until the outside of the tornado was about 150 yards away. His house only sustained broken windows and some missing shingles. The closest house to him was about 25 yards to the east. There was nothing left but the foundation.

Looks like the threat is now inland rain and flooding (and tornado warnings).  Listening to the NC governor now; western NC is dealing with water levels they've never seen.

Looks like Atlanta proper may have lucked out as the eye went just east of it, so they didn't take the brunt.  But I'll let @peeniereport on the scene.

My cousin moved there from CA because it was cheaper.  She desperately wants to move back.  The grass isnt always greener.  She going through her first hurricane. She said luckily their has has "hurricane proof" windows.  I guess thats a thing.

Moved to Florida a few months ago. Love it here . Real estate where I am is strong. Sold my house in MA paid cash here. Sorry I couldn’t move here earlier

Pensacola escaped again. Debbie and Francine nothing and Helene highish wind without rain. We had three nice days while others not very far away were getting hurricane smacked. They've gotten their share of hurricane beatdowns here, and surly will again, but not so far this season.

Thanks for the concern.  We lost power for a couple days at the house.  Internet and cable is still out.   A ton of trees down but none on our property.  Power was restored at the condo Friday though so I have been staying here.  I feel really bad for everyone hit hard.  We never expected all the damage.

 So glad that you and everyone else are safe there and far. I’m still scratching my brain over this one and the severity of the impact it caused after landfall as it moved north. It’s hopefully an anomaly that won’t happen again anytime soon. They call them hundred year storms. Le5s hope so. This is the worst one I have ever seen. 
 

 If you want to donate, please avoid Red Cross. Find other charities that the donations go to towards this catastrophe and isn’t shared by the rest of the worlds. I’m not saying Red Cross is bad, they are incredibly good. And a great service, but focus directly on those in need here at home.

Thanks.  I was shocked.  I went to bed Thursday after the game and everything was fine outside.  I was expecting to get up Friday morning to go diving.  I looked out my window Friday morning surprised to see some branches down.  Power was out but I figured it would be on soon.  Then I looked next door and two big trees were down.  If either had fell the other way they would have hit the house.  Then I started to hear it all.  

The worst is a guy I play poker on the island is building a house and they are living in a mobile home on the property until the house is finished.  A tree fell on the mobile home and pinned his wife and small child.  He was checking on things in the house at the time and heard the crash.  He was sure they were dead.  He had to break in through a window.  They were alive and the kid crawled out but she was pinned.   It took hours and several neighbors to get her out.  They had to cut the tree with a chainsaw in the middle of the night wind and rain going crazy while she was pinned under the tree.  She is fine but what a story.

Crazy photo (this is in WV).  My understanding is part of the reason it was so bad was because there was also a lot of rain that fell just BEFORE Helene even hit.
