Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, 10/8-9

Recommended Posts

Time to buy those things you never needed!

If anyone sees good deals, post them here.

I just bought a Greenworks 80V hedge trimmer.  I've got their lawn mower, blower, and chain saw, and they are all great.  I have a ton of bougainvillea, oleander, and other random shrubs, and my Ryobi 20V trimmer just isn't cutting it (literally).

I put it in my cart at $240 yesterday, just bought it today for $170.

I'm thinking of grabbing these Bose headphones:

https://www.amazon.com/Bose-QuietComfort-Cancelling-Headphones-Bluetooth/dp/B0D4Z9BZV2?pd_rd_w=Gs0e6&content-id=amzn1.sym.73dc6561-f64a-4c91-90ad-ba58f539ea6e&pf_rd_p=73dc6561-f64a-4c91-90ad-ba58f539ea6e&pf_rd_r=6PJBKKKPQS952HEK26CG&pd_rd_wg=wY8zz&pd_rd_r=173c484a-df38-4bc6-8674-8b26633cda20&pd_rd_i=B0D4Z9HG1X&th=1

I "had" Bose headphones over a decade ago and loved them, but somehow, my wife absconded them, and now they are hers.  🤔 She still uses them all the time.

I have Jabra 85 earbuds which I like well enough, but there are some things (yard work, rowing machine, listening to good music) that I do regularly and I'd like serious noise cancellation, along with occasional travel etc.

Anyone have experience with these?

Last time (and I see they are similarly discounted this time) I got a bunch of Blink cameras for 50%+ off.  I just installed them at the farm a couple weeks ago and they work great.  I'm on the cloud storage and software trial for free the first month.  Normally I'd probably just download the recordings and do it myself, but, this stuff works flawlessly.  It alerts your phone to motion and is able to identify people.  It stitches different motions together, even from different cameras, so you have a complete recording of whatever event caused it to record.  I'll easily pay $100 for the first year and then revaluate after we've moved to the farm full time. I got 7 cameras for ~$200, normally ~$450.  No brainer.

I’ve had two Blink cameras at my house for about 4 years now and they’ve been great.

I used to buy my own cameras and use Blue Iris.  Super powerful software, but, lots of time configuring and maintaining.  So glad I switched, these are plug and play and they just work.

I have these. Good sound cancelling and comfortable. They fold up nicely for travel and battery life is good.

Personally wouldn’t want to work out in them but would recommend otherwise.

Thanks.

For workouts, I'm only thinking about the rowing machine.  I like to watch a Netflix show while I do it (on the 3rd episode of Dexter, meh, I'm not sure it will stick), listen to pods, or music, but I have to blast the volume even with the noise cancelling of the Jabra.

They will def help with that (not having to blast the sound) and help save your ears.

Might get a bit hot and extra sweaty would be my only concern and the pads and top part that goes over the head might not handle that super well.

Thats’s a good deal on them.

Just got back from Costco, two observations:

1. Saw an 8-ish yr old girl walking with Beats headphones on.  They seemed kinda small, do they have kid size?  If not, I'm not sure about the size for an adult.

2. Costco had the same Bose headphones I got for the same price, $199 (black only that I saw, I got the darker blue ones).  Perhaps Bose is coming out with a new model and trying to move current inventory?  Doesn't matter to me, as that's the way I like to buy technology -- I rarely need the latest greatest, and will take a deal on the then-current bestest technology.

But for anyone interested in them, they may be available at Costco for a while.

On a random Costco note, there was a truck in the parking lot selling car keys.  I learned it's affiliated with Costco and rotates to different Costcos in the region.   I lost one of my 2019 Lexus remotes/keys, and the dealership charges $450-ish.  I asked about it and unfortunately they only currently go up to 2018 (check back in 6 months) for my ES.  The girl (34B) estimated their cost would be $300.  A while back I looked into trading/selling my car,

But if you need such a remote, might be worth checking out.

I think Lithium Ion is the proper term.  Can't use the regular AA.

Also, Amazon has this Blink package on sale.  I have no idea if it is a good deal; I've got a single Aosu video doorbell on my front door which works well.

That $99, plus a doorbell $29 and two indoor minis $19 is what I got last time for ~$200. That adds up now to $170. Great price. The hub, or whatever they call it comes with the 3 outdoor cameras so they all talk to each other.  System has worked flawlessly for me so far.  2000 miles away getting alerts on my phone. So far the lawn guys cutting the pasture, foking ground hog and a bird that likes to hang out on the porch light right next where I mounted one of the outdoor cameras.  And a giant moth at the doorbell every night.  Correctly identified as a "person" the lawn guys. Animals are just "motion detected".

i think this just illustrates how lackluster  "deal days" like these usually are, black friday, etc etc.

lackluster in the sense that rarely are the deals specific to the retailer  (plus so often the old raise the price and then mark it down to look like a sale routine)

Well... yes and no.  I still had that Blink link open, and it is back up from $99 to $259.  I also use a plug-in called "keepa" which shows the historical price on Amazon, I highly recommend it.  The blink was $259 for the past three months except for a 2-week window in late August ($139) and the 2-week window that ended yesterday ($99).  The Bose headphones were $250 for all of August, then up to $350 until the two Prime Days.

That being said, Costco probably has comparable vendor influence as Amazon, and it wouldn't surprise me if they have in their contracts the option to sell products at Prime Day deals.  And/or like I speculated, Bose maybe has some new headphones coming out and wants to dump inventory.

I don't go to Costco that often but I'm tempted to stop in, say, next week and see if they still have the deal going on.

i've used some extensions before...  i'm sure there are deals to be had, i've just always been of the mindset that much of these highly advertised sale days falls into one of a few categories (can be found other places for the same deal, about to be discounted as something new is released, had a price raise before the discount, etc) ... and I love a good deal, I use rakuten when I shop online, discount codes etc.

i am also similar to you with what you mentioned before. I prefer the next best thing at a discount over the latest and greatest that has yet to be widely tested / reviewed.

I looked at my orders because I didn't remember paying $130 for just the 3 outdoor cameras.  It was actually in a package deal with the doorbell for $120.  I remember now buying it twice at the time because the first time it didn't add to my cart correctly.  And then did a return.

The prices for these, and many other things, are a steal on prime day any way you slice it.  There is a lot of 3rd party garbage though too so using camel or keepa is the way to go.

Again, I don't disagree.  I will say that the Greenworks trimmer I initially mentioned was $240 going back to April, other than this window.  So it definitely was a deal.  Somebody like Greenworks might sell stuff as a loss leader occasionally to get you hooked on their battery/tool system (like I am with Ryobi 20V for tools that don't need 80V).

Even if something is available elsewhere for the same price, I'll almost always buy it from Amazon because (1) free and fast shipping, and (2) easy returns.  Costco would be an exception, plus I'd have it already instead of waiting until tonight (but it would be black, not the cool blue).  But I had to go to Costco and walk past (and notice) the display to know about the deal.

We buy our computers at Costco when it's time to upgrade, when on sale (usually Black Friday), because we can go in and see them first.

On your last point, I totally agree on the bolded.  As an electrical engineer, I'm very aware that no matter how much you try qualify a product before release, it doesn't really get tested until it goes to market and the public puts it through the ringer.
