Is the term Yankee offensive to some?

Recommended Posts

Are the Yankee's in trouble due to an offensive nickname?  It seems so far they have received a pass.  Why?

What's the point of the thread then?

During the Civil War, the term "Yankee" was used derogatorily in the South to refer to Americans loyal to the Union

Why do Yankee and MAGA go hand in hand?  Both winners?  :)

The term "Yankee" has a history as a slur, and is still used in a disparaging way in some regions of the United States

I’ve heard it a few times since we’ve been in Florida the past few months. Doesn’t bother me because it’s used by hayseeds

British General James Wolfe made the earliest recorded use of the word "Yankee" in 1758 when he referred to the New England soldiers under his command.

Northerners being offended by the term Yankee is just as stupid as the southern people who use it to try to be derogatory.

I read an interesting book years ago about the Civil War. One of the chapters describes how the The union and the confederacy would lay down their arms and play baseball on Sundays and then kill each other on the battlefield. Hence the name Yankees for the north.

It’s amazing how much our beloved country has become so sensitive about our past. And it’s sad and only going to get worse.

The Yankees weren’t formed until the early 1900’s.

The term Yankees was used during the civil war to describe the union soldiers by the confederacy. The band “Damn Yankees” doesn’t refer to the NY Yankees, it’s the term used during that period of our history. HTH

Its right up there with the people who use the term, thinking they are being edgy.

Vikings too.  Maybe not all Nordic people want to be portrayed with a helmet and horns and long blonde braids.
