The Penguin on HBO

Recommended Posts

I keep hearing good things about this series.

Has anyone watched it?  Do you need to watch "The Batman" movie prior to the series?

Just finished it actually. Pretty good. Gets super dark at the end

Colin Ferrell is outstanding

Well written.  Solid dialogue

I'm about an hour into the movie.  Definitely like the gritty vibe so far. 👍

Can't say enough about his performance - he should garner some award nods.

Maybe pull out your old VHS movies and pop in On Golden Pond. :dunno:

I've never seen On Golden Pond nor do I own a VHS player, but being from the east coast, I find the acting to be a bit heavy, overblown and not believable even within the fantasy sense of that world. Lastly, I am tired of shows and media feeling the need to put a person of color in a role that is unlikely just to add diversity. Add characters that make sense. I haven't watched an entire show yet, so I may just need to give in to it and pay more attention. So far it's meh.

No, he has some side kick that makes no sense. (Victor Aguilar)

So a black guy was awarded a key role on a highly advertised HBO series that 99% of unknown actors in this country would sell their souls to get, and you think it's bad for that guy?

It's fair if you think the show sucks, but what's with the "diversity hire" stuff?

The virtue signalling usually bothers me, (Multiverse of Madness, "America" has two mothers, Agatha All Along-the kid is gay), but not at all in The Penguin.  Just felt like we are going to have a sidekick(probably so Penguin isn't just talking to himself explaining his plans) and it's going to be someone he would organically meet. IMO, other than the contrivance of a sidekick at all - I never felt like his ethnicity was about virtue signalling, but more "hey, this is the type of person he would meet in this particular world".

Now the stutter-I could have done without that(that was scripted).

I agree.   I am against forced diversity, but how he met Victor makes sense.  And the kid does well

100% on all accounts.

They met up while the guy was trying to steal the Penguin's hubcaps.  This is the rare case that his race fits the role.
