TBayXXXVII 2,396 Posted December 4 I'd release him. He goes from a crap team to a contender and he can't be professional? Dump him. Let him be unemployed.
Showboat 247 Posted December 5 Read that the Ravens would be better off keeping him as he is a free agent at the end of the season and they can get draft pick compensation if he signs with another team.

Compensatory picks are based on money and playing time. This is now 3 teams in 6 months who are sick of him. What makes anyone think Johnson's going to get a big money deal. My guess is that he gets a 1 year $3M deal. That's not going to get them anything.

You may be underestimating the lunacy of NFL free agency. He will be one of the biggest names available in a WR-happy league. It only takes one desperate team. rotisserieking 55 Posted December 5 Funny - as soon as I heard the news I thought the same thing. Another talented Steelers WR who can't get away from the crazy.

I know teams will do stupid things, but at this point, I think everyone knows the "buyer beware" tag associated with Johnson at this point. Spotrac.com have his market value guestimated at 3 yr/$30M. That's likely before the drama. I'm guessing the maket value, at best, will be half of that. I don't think that will move the needle on a compensatory pick. But, as you noted, it only takes one desperate team.

(at least.... if hes smart.... no guarantee of that)
kutulu 1,624 Posted December 8 Read that the Ravens might not want to release him in order to keep him from ending up with Pitt again

Compensatory picks are based on a few factors.... contract size, performance, and net gain/loss in free agency. If he doesn't get a good deal, the Ravens are likely to spend more to bring in than what he and others are going to get elsewhere, and he probably won't yield them anything. I'd be like, I'll give you a good contract, but little to no guaranteed money. so if you misbehave, I can just cut you.

I don't disagree, but if they cut him, then his only pay will be while rostered and his playing time would be limited. Again though, it would be contingent on who the Ravens sign as well. If Baltimore only loses Johnson and no other impact players, but bring in more contract money than what Johnson got, then they get nothing. Simply, I think the odds of them getting anything more than a 7th round comp pick is slim... almost infinitesimal for more than a 6th.

I guess time will tell. we also dont know how serious the infraction is. I think Baltimore is a no nonsense organization so maybe more strict than other teams on rules and such. but I cannot say for sure. that said, an infraction serious enough to warrant a 1 game suspension should be considered serious enough.
