Another problem with H1Bs is the difficulty in converting them to green cards / permanent resident status, eventually leading to citizenship.  My understanding is that that is very difficult to do (basically it is a random lottery of very small numbers), and the result is that H1B employees are basically slaves to their employers, unable to move jobs or negotiate any employment terms because they are only in the country through their current employment.

It seems like this whole process is broken and needs fixing.

Back to your point, we as a country are not generating enough people to meet the tech needs to be globally competitive.  If we are going to bring in immigrants, these are the folks we should be bringing in.  In parallel, we need to get our own youth training more in STEM.  But that's a broken record.

I don’t know whether anyone has directly asked Musk why he needs the H1B visa to find skilled workers after he laid off hundreds of skilled American workers last year. Or whether the people he’s laid off from Tesla want 32-hour work weeks and their own unique pronouns etc.

But if they did, Elon would probably would make an argument like this one, and count on his booktlicking dupes to cuck for him.
