Lets Talk Old School Malls That Are Left

Recommended Posts

My GF still works at one in PA. and went walking around the other night waiting for a half hour to take her home. That mall use to be booming since the 70's and focking depressing... their escalators don't work and the owners don't care, Food Court that was booming in the past only has one store now. I think old school malls can still flourish but the problem is the slum lord companies that own them. Charge crazy rent to their stores they have and they leave, also the owners invest in no upkeep what so over. My point is slum lord big corp owners are the reason why they are dying and not online buying and etc. Thoughts ?

Post Script I ended up buying the Honeymooners 39 EP Dvd at FYE

Upkeep cost money, so they would need to charge even more to those store owners, we have three malls here in Reno , and all three of them are in very good shape, clean, and worthy of shopping at, but still lots of empty spaces.

I think during covid people learn how to buy online, and have kept doing so.

What shall we use to fill the empty spaces? :dunno:

We had 2 in Mankato Minnesota. The Downtown Mall & Madison East. The downtown mall included theaters and was mostly small department/boutique stores. Madison East was anchored by Sears on one side & Woolworths on the other. I think the downtown mall still has a theater, but is a shell of his former self. ME is 90% healthcare related businesses now.

I miss them.

Whenever the subject of malls comes up, I always think of Dawn Of The Dead

Walmart bought the Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania for $34 million in February 2025. The mall is best known as the filming location for the 1978 movie Dawn of the Dead.

Walmart plans to redevelop the mall into a retail & commercial destination.

Mostly only thugs and poor people go to the mall because they have nothing better to do. They'll buy a crappy preztel and think they're living large.

I don't think it's online and store like Ross, Kohls and etc. seem to do good on their own.

A tale of two malls:

Ridgedale Mall in Wayzata is booming on a Saturday.  They put a lot of money into it.  A new D!ck's House Of Sport, a new Nordstroms, plus a remodeled Macy's.  The restaurants moved in and most all of the suites are filled.  Lots of teenaged kids.

Southdale Mall in Edina.  The original indoor mall in the US.  Absolutely dead on a weekend.  They have a Theater, a Dave & Busters,  a state of the art Lifetime Fitness, a brand new Kowalski's Market (super-fancy grocery store) and are now building an attached condo/apartment.  Nobody is there.  Half of the suites are empty or being "remodeled".  The Macy's is falling apart.  The Sears is no longer and turned into a DMV.  This used to be THE place in the 90's.  It's eerie to go into a place like this.  It reminds me of the 2008 crash

The eerie feeling is what I felt the other night in my mall.

Ross Stores is doing great, Kohl's is teetering on the edge. Down 75% over the past 5 years. I do a lot of shopping online, but it's mostly for household items like TP, toothpaste, laundry detergent, shampoo, body wash, glass cleaner, etc. Try to make one big order every spring, enough for a year. That way I don't have to go out shopping for those things in the winter.

The forecast lows for Sunday through Wednesday are -15° -20° -13° -11°

I'm retired, so whenever I see a stretch of weather like that coming up, I buy everything else I need in advance. I'll be heading to the grocery store in about 20 minutes. I feel for those that have to go out in that every morning this coming week. It's amazing what the body can adapt to. On Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday this week, the highest temperature was probably about 10°......... today it got up to 25° and it felt warm.

Nobody goes to our local malls anymore because of the blacks. Once the bus line from the citites come to local malls, it’s over. 100 person fights, theft, vandalism…mall security couldn’t handle it.
Police were eventually brought in to handle security in the parking lot, but the teens would create an atmosphere that no consumer wanted to deal with. Loitering rules and mandatory adult supervision/chaperone didn’t help much either. Thus, it became a ghost town and everyone shops online for the stores that were once there.

I was the mall a while back. Kids were playing in the arcade so I went to one of those massage chairs. It was full of illegals just sitting on them. I told one to scram that I wanted to use it and the rest followed. I said “Vominos, rapido”. I then enjoyed my 15 minutes.  As it should be. It’s my country.
