By the time a lot of that manufacturing comes online he won’t be in office.   I'm not disputing anything you posted. But the alternative is we do nothing. There's not a plan from Democrats to address this other than opposing Trump. So by default it's this or status quo. If we agree the playing field is not level, this is only partially addressing it, but it is starting to do so. At least Biden did not reverse the tariffs on China when he was in office. One thing that is a possibility, how often does the government willingly let go of revenue? I'd like to see the projections and actual (when available) of what flows into the government from these. It's not going to be small and by default the deficit is going to be reduced.  But I agree short term it could be bad. The American public I have next to no faith in as far as having the stomach to stick through turbulent waters if they come and therefore is politically perilous for Trump and Republicans. You’re 100% right about the Dems. There’s a case for short term pain = long term benefit, but Trump never made that case. He campaigned on lowering costs. Can’t blame the public if they don’t have the stomach for it. I’d be willing to bet Trump does away with most of the tariffs before the midterms. It’s a stunt not a strategy.

The alternative is that we provide incentives for corporations to invest in the US. Like the chips act which brought chip manufacturing to the US. It's using a carrot instead of a stick. Give people a reason to invest here without punishing them or consumers. The other alternative is to renegotiate trade deals. Trump did this with NAFTA, creating the the usmca. Instead of renegotiating other trade deals he is just punishing the world. It's not a smart tactic. If you're hoping for long term gain don't hold your breath. Factories won't start popping up overnight if at all. The likely outcome here is that this crashes the global economy and in 2 years Congress unwinds it all and we to healing and moving forward.

HTH We haven't seen higher costs yet, have we? You, like @The Real timschochet, are jumping ahead a little bit. You might have a legit complaint IF his Tariffs result in higher prices. But, as even you have noted, they may not even last. A bunch of countries have already capitulated and started lowering/eliminating Tariffs. But I would posit that anyone who listened to his platform understood that there could be some short term pain in the name of long term gain. It's unfortunate that so much of our populace lives in sound bites and doesn't intelligently parse the entirety of what someone says. There was a study done a few Presidential cycles ago documenting how each Presidential cycle finds the candidates dumbing down their vocabulary/speaking style. Kamala was probably the epitome of that. She speaks like a third grader. Idiocracy truly was a documentary and eventually we will have our own Camacho as President. Fortunately I'll likely be long gone by then. My guess is Trump eliminates most of the tariffs before midterms and claims Great Success. I didn’t watch a ton of Trump speeches but I do remember a lot of biiching about inflation and a promise to lower prices.
