MLB's new torpedo bats

Recommended Posts

These are the hot new thing in the majors.  They kinda look more like a bowling pin than a torpedo to me, with the thickest part of the bat customized to where each individual hitter tends to contact the ball.  Bonus is that because the center of mass is shifted towards the handle, the bat requires less torque to swing.

The Yankees are the biggest users and they are on a ridiculous homer barrage to start the season.  Interestingly, Judge isn't using one, but he has 4 homers already, because Judge.

NEW YORK -- Standing in front of his Yankee Stadium locker on Sunday, Anthony Volpe presented two bats for inspection. In his left hand, the Yankees shortstop displayed one he had used last season; in his right, the “Torpedo” model that has become a hot topic following the club’s historic nine-homer barrage on Saturday afternoon.

The difference between the two bats is noticeable, as the “Torpedo” barrel rests in a non-traditional location, closer to the hitter’s hands.

And they’re legal; Major League Baseball confirmed Sunday that the bats do not violate Major League rules or bat supplier regulations. Rule 3.02 states that bats cannot be more than 2.61 inches in diameter and 42 inches in length.

“The concept makes so much sense. I know I’m bought in,” Volpe said. “The bigger you can have the barrel where you hit the ball, it makes sense to me.”

The Yankees made home run history during their season-opening homestand, tying an AL/NL record with 15 home runs in their first three games of a season and tying a club mark with 13 home runs in two games. They belted four in Sunday's 12-3 win after clubbing nine on Saturday.

If anything remotely close to this success continues, I imagine darn near every hitter is going to try to implement this type of bat during the coming offseason.

How come no one struck him?

Yeah enough dads with kids at the game it's more likely he would get knocked the fock out.   Still going to get a nice charge and register as a sex offender.  No more passing out Halloween candy for him.

I haven't seen the torpedo bat specs or a comparison of one next to a typical MLB bat, but it sort of looks like a fungo bat the coaches would use to hit with in outfield/fielding practice.

If the torpedo bat is close to the 42 inch MLB limit and same weight, then it makes sense that the balls will fly farther.
